Charlie's soap users - disinfectant?

mobile: Charlie's soap users - disinfectant?

What disinfectant do you use with Charlie's Soap for your diaper laundry? I am not regular with putting one in, and while I usually rinse with some vinegar added, I think I need something more to help with buildup. I already regularly use very hot water after the first rinse, and regularly put in Dawn for residue.

I've liked Grapefruit Seed Extract in the past and might try that again.  I also very occasionally use some bleach. What about you? Looking for some new options. Does anyone use peroxide regularly?

ETA: to clarify, Charlie's does recommend using a disinfectant when doing laundry with their soap

I've never used disinfectant; my son is almost 6 months and no issues this far, knock on wood.

  • I would never (and never did) use anything else wit Charlie's. it doesn't work like other detergents so adding stuff would likely cause build up rather than remove it. When I need more cleaning, I would line dry in full sun. Never needed to do more than that. Always washed once in cold with Charlie's than once in hot with it.

  • I agree with MK - if you're getting regular build-up there is something going on with your wash routine. A disinfectant isn't going to help with that.

Also, no detergent is a disinfectant - not Charlie's, Tide, Tiny Bubbles, Country Save, etc. I've occasionally used GFSE when we've dealt with yeast, but on a regular basis I don't use a disinfectant at all.

In Charlie's laundry information, they do recommend adding a disinfectant.  I just don't recall them suggesting what kind.

ETA: ha, actually they do give some suggestions, including peroxide which I've considered using:

"Charlie's Soap is not a disinfectant. Follow care instructions on your child's diapers, but make sure to kill bacteria that might have survived the washing process: boiling, sunning, 1/4 cup vinegar (rinse), 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide (wash) or 1 tablespoon bleach in the wash. Left alone, such bacteria can cause
    severe, burn-like reactions."

  • I don't have any recs on disinfectant, but just think this is really interesting. I wish I had added some to our wash loads.  We used Charlie's for two years, but always felt like they weren't quite clean/needed something else (this was especially apparent around the 7-8 month mark)... so I did a Tide wash every two weeks or so, and monthly stripping with Dawn.  Hmm... might have to add disinfectant this time around with #2!  Then maybe I won't need to do the Tide wash.

I was thinking along similar lines, that for a few months, one might not notice anything. I'm a year and a half in with using Charlie's, and am wondering if not using one regularly is now showing effects. I use vinegar in the rinse most often, but I don't think that's working. I'm on a break from CD right now since my DD just potty trained, so I think I'll do a couple good washes, and just start up with some peroxide in the bleach dispenser once I start CD with the new baby this fall.
