Trying to Get Pregnant

Any other husbands with...

An acrosomal deficiency? We just got DH's SA back and the count is low (29 mil/mL), and the morphology is poor, with the note: "Oligospermia, about half the sperm present are within normal limits and about half have acrosomal deficiency."

I understand that this means the head of the sperm doesn't have the enzymes needed to penetrate the egg. That's about all I can find through my brief-ish google search. We have an appt with a urologist at a reproductive center on July 10th, but I'm just antsy. Anyone else going through this? Is IUI an option, or IVF?

 Thanks!

  • The sperm need to penetrate the egg on it's own for IUI.  If the sperm can't penetrate the egg, then IVF with ICSI may be recommended.  I'm sure you will learn lots at the appointment on the 10th.  Good luck!

  • From what I understand, IVF is usually the course of treatment with this diagnosis (though I don't know at what point, since half of his sperm appear normal). Does your husband take a multivitamin? That can help correct the deficiency somewhat, as should reducing exposure to environmental toxins.

  • Thanks for the replies! I'm glad we have a direction to go in but am anxious to hear what the doctor says. I've been having my husband take a multivitamin for the past few months. His testosterone dosage is pretty low but I'm curious if they think that's affecting it too.

     We'll see I guess! Thanks.
