Cloth Diapering

NB Cloth Diaper Recommendations

I haven't been on this board since I started CD'ing over a year ago and got comfortable with it. But I have not CD'd a NB. My youngest was 3mos old when we started. With #3 on the way, I'm wondering if it's worth the expense of CD'ing a NB or should I just use sposies until they fit into my BG 4.0's? I really don't care that it's better for baby, I only do it to save money. We *may* have a #4, but that's to be decided later on.

Also, which NB CD's would you recommend? I really like AIO's for a NB, but I can do pockets too. I like that the BG AIO's have the cut-out for the umbilical cord.

  • My BG AIO NBs don' thave much of a space for the cord.

  • If your motivation to CD is the cost savings, a full newborn stash of AIOs is probably not going to accomplish that.

A few words about the BG newborn AIOs specifically: as PP said, they don't really have a cut-out for the cord. They are more of a lowrise diaper instead. Also, DD outgrew the absorbency on them by 3 weeks old. They did not last us until OS diapers fit.

If you don't want to do prefolds or fitteds (which are best at containing runny newborn poo), I recommend Kawaii Pure & Natural pockets. They fit from 6-22 lbs, give or take, so much longer than a regular newborn diaper. They fit DD until she was about 8 months old. This might be a good choice if you don't anticipate LO #2 being PL-ed by the time LO #3 fits into your current diapers.

  • Swaddlebees simplex NB aio's are awesome. They still fit at 10 weeks. There's a snap down for the cord

These were by far our favorite.

  • I just had a baby, he does not fit into my cloth diapers so I'm going yo use flats, but I've been using disposables for 5 days, and he is pooping every two hours! So I would say yes you can save money, but probably only if you do prefolds or flats.
  • Prefolds & covers, baby!

  • If I had it to do over again (and hopefully I will one day), I would get 24-30 GMD workhorse fitteds.  I have some kawaii P&Ns and they work fine.  DD is tiny (7th percentile) so they may very well fit her until over a year.  I have discovered that fitteds are my very favorite (though I haven't tried AIOs).  I have a variety of types of fitteds and love them all.  30 newborn workhorses would be $165.  If you get the no closure version, I would guess they'd last until your OS dipes fit.  Plus I love the way fitteds contain the liquid poo.  I've never had a poo leak with a fitted.

Honestly, when I have another baby this is how I'm going with it.  At least 24 workhorse and like 6 covers, bam done.  Get the whole stash for lie 200 bucks and if you want to really save get it all used.

This is what I was thinking of doing for a large part of my newborn stash?  Quick question if you don't mind.  How long do you think I will be able to use no closure newborn fitteds?  Also, how often do you think I will have to change my LO with a fitted/cover combo?

I haven't actually used them yet, but they say until 11lbs...  My DD was born at 8lb5oz but dropped to 7lb1oz and has been a super slow gainer (~1lb/month instead of 2).  So she could have EASILY stayed in nb fitteds until at least 12 weeks.  I picked up a lot of homemade fitted by a friend that are mostly size smalls.  I've had them for about 7 weeks now and DD still fits in all of them.

How often to change will probably depend on your LO...  My girl hates to be wet, so if she's wearing natural fibers next to her skin she gets changed every 60-120 minutes unless she's sleeping.  She's going longer now that she's older.  When I was on leave there were days I'd change her every hour or less.  We mostly used prefolds, but it was about the same for fitteds.
