Positing a theory

I have a theory that there are two *types* of people: those who prefer Billy Joel and those who prefer Elton John. I could set up friendships and romantic relationships built on this alone. The two types should never, ever mix.

(I am not sober right now, but I am serious about this and demand to be taken seriously.)

The people who like them the same or dislike both should be alone forever.

  • Billy Joel gets me.  Just the Way You Are is one of the best love songs ever recorded.

Elton is cool too, but if I must choose, it's billy based on that one song.

  • When I was growing up, all my mom played in the car was Elton John, Billy Joel, and Phil Collins.

I still love both Billy and Elton...Phil not so much... He's ok.

  • I effing love Billy Joel. When I was young I used to play his records, yes records, and rock out all day long. My husband proposed to me to the tune of Uptown Girl, which will forever be my song.

I love me some Phil. As far as Elton and Billy... I'd have to say Elton wins.

I like Phil but he's not the same as Billy or Elton for me. I guess I'm slightly more of an Elton fan though. I walked down the aisle to Your Song.

Dh loves both (maybe Billy Joel just a little bit more) and he saw them when they toured together. FTR, he says Billy Joel put on a way better show than Elton.

  • A gf of mine tried arguing that Elton, not Billy, sang Piano Man.  I'm all, no. Hello?  Part of the lyrics are "Bill, I believe this is killing me," and last I knew, Elton =/= Bill.

Obviously, I'm more of a Billy fan, although I also like Elton. I'm also not an introvert.

Okay, srsly, your BOTH awesome. And this introvert likes both but prefers Elton. Because I remember when rock was young, me and Suzy had so much fun....
  • Billy is way better but I like them both. Their Piano Men concert was amazing.

I always assign something with We Didn't Start the Fire to my seniors! We listen to the song on repeat while they're working in the assignment. I consider it a success when 1/2 the senior class is singing it in the hallways.

  • Definitely Elton John. That's Why They Call It the Blues is my favorite song.

  • I'm gonna disagree with JC's theory, and here's why: I think BJ is more of a literal storyteller so extrovert live-in-the-moment types can relate to his songs more readily. EJ uses a lot more metaphor and symbolism in his lyrics so you have to be a deeper thinker who's willing to take the time to unpack the meaning.

And, embarrassingly, I'm not even drunk while writing this. I apparently just have a lot of feelz about the piano men. Stick out tongue

  • I think Billy Joel is the more talented, but Elton John is the superior vocalist.

I prefer Billy, but can't deny Elton his due.

ETA: after skimming the thread I will add that my wedding song was "Follow You, Follow Me" Genesis.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I love them both so much!! Billy a slight bit more. I saw them tour together in 1992 and then again a few years ago.

  • Lurker.

My mom forced me to listen to Elton as a child. Turning off Elton and Clapton were illegal and you might have gotten slapped over it. (kidding, kidding, my mommy was not a child abuser and certainly not over the radio. But you did get the dirty look and she changed that channel right back.)

Strangely enough, I love both Elton and Billy. Like equally. I don't think I could choose just one the rest of my life. Maybe Elton a slight little edge cuz I know all his stuff. Also, I'm a huge outgoing crazy person, but my best friend insists I'm an introvert, so what the hell do I know?

...time on my haaaands could be time spent with you..

    Laughing like children
    Living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
    And I guess that's why
    They call it the blues

I don't mind that this is totally stuck in my head.

  • I love them both but prefer Billy. I think his voice is incredibly hot. Maybe it's his accent. I mean, who else can make "Who needs a house out in Hackensack?" sound sexy?

I didn't read most of this thread, so I'm not sure how Genesis came into play here, but yes to them. Also, I am just now listening to Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, or as I call them, "Slipknot" Genesis. Selling England by the Pound. Good shiit.
