Baby Names

Family Names WWYD?

I've been so excited about baby names I kinda forgot about my two sil's who are due around the same time as me... We had picked out boy name and a girl name both of which are family names on my DH's side. SIL's are my DH's sister and brothers wife. They haven't showed any interest in family names before but DH's grandparents passed last year and that's where my names are coming from...none of us know the sex of our LO's yet so there hasn't been any serious talk of baby names. WWYD?

Re: Family Names WWYD?

  • I would just ask them.

  • I would mention that you were planning on using names X, Y, and Z, and ask if they have some names in mind. I wouldn't get too excited just yet
  • Loading the player...
  • I would keep my name choices to myself until you either have the baby, then announce, or if you are finding out the sex and plan to solidify a name before delivery announce it then. No reason to fuss about it in advance, especially before you know the sex.

This. I would just mention that you and DH were talking about names, throw out a few on your list and see what they say. Then you can go from there.

Same here.  Won't know what's they're thinking until you ask.

No one owns a name. Use the name you love. With that said, if it bothers you that repeats may occur, talk to them. For us, meaning trumps all. My grandma was Mary Lou. We used the name as DD1's first name [Mary]. My cousin's wife had a baby 9 months later and they used Mary as the mn. It doesn't bother me one bit. She meant a lot to us both. Another cousin used Stanley as a mn for her son after her DH's grandfather. Well, Stanley was my grandfather's name [not the same person] too. It's on our short list for a boy. It bothers her that we may use it, but again meaning is important to us. A third cousin used Fisher after DH's grandfather in the mn spot. We have Fisher on our short list for a first name. Again it really doesn't bother us. Granddaddy was important to DH's cousin and DH; it doesn't surprise anyone that the name is carrying on. HTH.

This! I would talk about your decision openly, though, to give your relatives a "head's up", but there is no reason why you can't use family names - as long as you're okay with the names being duplicated.

  • My cousin and I both have the same middle name of Anne because we are both named after the same person. Not a big deal IMO.
