No one thought to thoroughly check under the bed? It's a classic hiding spot.
Yeah I wondered this too.
if you read the original article linked in the first paragraph, they did look, but there were piles of stuff and they didn't see her there.
I hope DD isn't into hiding like this when she is older, least of all in a department store. I'd lose my shizz and be a blubbering mess in about 2 minutes, I'm sure of it.
Like I said, they didn't thoroughly check under the bed. At that age, kids move things around to hide really well. Even now, DS2 will go in the bottom of his hamper and put clothes on top of himself.
When I was little, maybe 7 ish, we were on vacation and woke up in the morning and couldn't find my little brother (2). We were convinced he had been kidnapped, or fell off the balcony. He had fallen off the bed and rolled under, and was sleeping peacefully while we freaked out.

This all seems silly to me. Why wouldn't they have started MOVING stuff under that bed before calling the cops and before it had turned into 7 hrs? I guess when you're panicked, you may not think to do that? Also.. she definetly must have been sleeping.

Oops, reading fail on my part, not yours;]
I didn't mean to come off snarky. After 7 hours, you'd think they would have done more thorough checks. That's all. The whole thing is just so crazy. I guess the important part is that the little girl is fine.
When my youngest was about 3 I went to check her before I went to bed & she wasn't in her room. Thought she might have crawled in w/my DH- nope. After searching our room & her room several times, I started to freak. I even went into my older DD's room & felt around on her bed- nothing. This is like 11pm & we even have chimes on our doors so she couldn't have gotten out w/o me hearing something- I could not imagine where she was. I woke up my DH & we spent a good 10-15 minutes searching the house & I was about ready to call 911 (all the while knowing they were going to think I was crazy). Finally on last pass through my older DD's room- all lights on now- I see a foot sticking out from under her table. My DD had gone into her sisters room, covered herself up w/a pile of blankets/pillows & fallen asleep under her table. I seriously thought I was losing my mind. Scariest thing ever, and I have never been so relieved to see anyone in my entire life! She hadn't done it before, and hasn't done it since, thank God.

That's hilarious.
Anyway, glad she's ok.
