I'm just a little nervous about this idea. My Doctor said it's perfectly safe but I just feel like I'm cheating something. Please tell me I shouldn't worry about this.
I was induced 4 days after my due date with DD. this time I don't plan to be induced unless medically necessary which it wasn't with my first. Hindsight is 20/20 and there were some things I would prefer not to happen again.
It's your due date, so safety wise it should be fine (it's not like he's trying to induce three weeks early or something), but is there a reason you want to be induced rather than just waiting it out? Induction is more likely to lead to a c section or other interventions than waiting to go into labor naturally, so if I had my choice, I would wait unless there is a medial reason to be induced. (FWIW, I am trying to VBAC, but they refuse to let me go past 40 weeks so I either go into labor on my own before that or end up with a repeat c section...I wish I were allowed a little more time, so I am kinda biased.)
I was induced at 39 weeks due to complications and had a 53 hour labor. I am PRAYING that I go on my own this time, being induced is NO FUN AT ALL. I completely understand wanting to see your LO and not wanting to go another week or so, but my experience with induction was horrible. Of course, everyone is different! (but i would never choose to be induced)

I'm being induced on 7/3. Due date is on 7/10. My Ob doesn't want me going past 39 weeks due to GD. I'm a little nervous. She says they'll give the epidural after starting the pitocin. I asked if I had to be dilated to 4cm. She said I didn't and that it was up to her descretion. I always though epidurals weren't suppose to be given too early.
Everyone has their own experiences but it depends on your health and your doctors patience, I am due any day with my 4th little one, I have been induced with all of my previous three because of high blood pressure, but only my 1st was before my due date, here is where I suggest waiting, its being hooked up to the monitors, pitocin, stuck in bed that I hated the most, my daughter took 4 days before she came, my sons were 2-3 days, but my doctor is rare because he is PATIENT, if he does induce me again, I know that he will no pressure me to have a c-section just because it make be taking my body time to go into full labor, not all doctors are like that, and hence the reason I have stayed with mine, As long as I and the baby are not in any stress he will not want force a c-section,and thats where i think you need to talk to your doctor about, is what if it takes me a few days to get into active labor, as long as I and the baby are ok will you be patient, I have several friends at another practice that unfortunately did not have that option once they were induced, good luck, I know its always a hard decision when you don't have complete control over the situation.
Are you at the point of having to make that decision? Things can change very quickly in the last few weeks. I would wait as long as you can and see how you feel as you approach 40w. Personally, I would not induce before 41w. As uncomfortable as being super pregnant is, I want my baby to come when she's ready (unless medical complications arise).

Is this your first child? My doc won't induce until 41 weeks with a FTM. I had a very successful spontaneous labor and vag birth with my DD at 38w last time. Because of that and the progress I've already made with my cervix she will induce me at 39w due to medical issues. I hope I don't have to be but we'll see. I would only consider inducement if it were favorable.

This is my understanding as well. In our birth class they talked about waiting until 4-5 cm before giving the epidural to decrease chance of intervention.
I wouldn't induce before 42 weeks unless there is strong, compelling evidence that you and/or the baby are in danger.
Yup. Inductions don't always work, which means you could labor for a long time and then end up with a C-section. Barring a medical NEED for an induction, I'd avoid it like the plague and let my body do its thing.
I agree with this, I don't understand why your OB would talk of induction at this point at all unless there was a medical necesity.

Lurker here, but my understanding is that more recent research does not support the idea that one must wait until an arbitrary point of dilation before getting an epidural, though many practitioners are still cautious about this - my OB was. My anecdote is that I was induced at 39w3d. I waited to get the epidural until I was 4cm. They were slowly increasing the dosage of pitocin and I was not dilating very rapidly. At 4cm my OB broke my water, then I got the epidural (by which time I was in extreme pain). The next time they checked my cervix after getting the epidural - maybe 90 minutes later? - I had dilated to 8. I was complete about an hour after that, pushed for 40 to 50 minutes, and then DS was born. I had an unripe cervix and had required Cytotec the night before. My mom's first labor was precipitous so that may have played a role in my fast labor, but it was definitely not the long, drawn out induction horror story you often hear on TB.
Based on my experience, if I am induced in a future pregnancy I will get the epidural before they start the pitocin. My best friend did this with her second baby and said it was awesome.
I was induced on my due date with DS and it was GREAT! I went in the night before and was give cervidil, by 1am I was having contractions, 7am pitocin, 11:55 DS arrived! It worked out perfect for us. I was having BH a lot for the week leading up to my due date, and DS had dropped really low. I would do it again. GL!
I had very high BP with my son and had to be induced at 39w 4d. I knew he was nowhere near ready and that proved to be true. They broke my water and 7 hours later nothing happened so they started pitocin. 10 hours after that I was at full strength Pitocin with no epi and didn't dilate a smidge past 4cms (which I had been for three weeks prior to the induction). I ended up with a csection. I would wait based on my own experience.
From someone who is being induced at this moment... don't do it. I'm at 34 hours already and only a fingertip dilated. Its a nightmare with hellish contractions, spotting, and lots of boredom. Let yourself go naturally if you can. I've got a long way to go still. I wouldn't do this again if I could avoid it. I have borderline pre e though.
I was induced at 41 weeks with my first and 40 weeks 4 days with my second. Both inductions went smoothly and I will happily induce with this baby if I get to 40 weeks and he hasn't made his debut. Everyone's body is different and I think reacts differently to induction. I would trust your doctor.
I was induced 1 week and 1 day after my due date. I was hesitant at first, but am glad I did it because there was a small amount of merconium in the placenta, letting it go longer in my case would have created potentially bad problems.
My doc would have let me go to 42 weeks. I was induced at 40 weeks 2 days due to low fluids. It would not have been safe for baby to wait. I was in active labor for 9 hours, got an epidural that only partially helped but was still amazing, and delivered in 23 minutes. Regardless of it being medically necessary, I would not be electively induced if I have another.
