Baby in a  convertible car?

My husband and I were driving home this morning and we were driving next to a couple who were in a Camaro with the top down. My husband looks over and there is a very small baby in the back seat in his carseat. We felt bad because it is currently in the 90s and windy here and the baby was fully exposed to the sun as they did not have the top up and also did not have the cover on the carseat up. Is this odd or is it me? Would you put a little baby in the back of a convertible with the top down?

I wouldn't do it, but there are a lot of things I see parents doing that I wouldn't even think of doing. So I guess to each their own, but personally I don't think it's safe. On the highways by us there are a lot of tractor trailers and construction vehicles, I can hear the rocks and what-not hitting the windshield, I can't imagine if that hit my baby.

Yeah the car rolling would be a concern. Plus it's hot here and most people have their air conditions full blast in their cars, we did when we were driving next to them.

My DH is a mechanic and he said that convertible cars aren't safe for babies/kids especially with the top down.

My DH is a fireman and there are specific types of cars that he said DD could never go in based on accidents he has responded to. Convertibles were at the top of the list!!!

My DH has a convertable and there are stickers all over it saying not to put a baby in it under any circumstances.

Depending on the baby's age, I would worry about suffocation even before the physical threats a convertible represents.  (I learned this from my best friend . . . ) Did you know an infant can suffocate in their carseat if windows are rolled down due to the fact they don't know how to process/breathe through the air pressures?  They have the potential to hold their breath and suffocate amidst all the air flow/changing pressure/etc.  It freaks me out just thinking about an infant in the back of an open convertible.
