I tried out some new-to-us fitted diapers last night w/ ds. Whoo-boy, I now know what ammonia smells like in a diaper!
I've been researching stripping methods, but am a bit at a loss. There seem to be different ways to go about doing this if you have soft water vs hard water. We have rural water, that when tested is smack dab in the middle.
It's definitely not hard, we don't have a softener and don't get much lime scale/calcium buildup. However, it's not really "soft" either.
How would you go about getting rid of the smell. The diapers are Earthlingz fitteds - they've got a two layer poly-fleece shell w/ 2 layer hemp snap-in inserts.
I'm thinking maybe an Oxy-clean soak with a bunch of hot rinses, then sun to dry?
Re: Ammonia w/ "moderate" water
The oxyclean part is totally optional, you can just use hot water rinses/washes.
Just keep going until there are no bubbles in the water (then I usually throw another in for good measure) and smell it when it comes out. It should smell like nothing,

So you think I'd be okay not adding anything special to the water? Well, gosh, now, that sounds easy!
I have a HE frontloader...does that change anything? (Other than making it harder to check for suds.)

Great, thanks!
I probably will throw in a wet towel. I actually have six or seven of the diapers that I bought secondhand, this is just the first one I've used. I think I'll go ahead and rinse them all out well, though.
Yeah, I would do them all at once just to be sure. Stripping is such a PITA to begin with, I wouldn't want to do it more than once if I didn't have to.
