Synthroid and OPKs

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was prescribed synthroid to help. What I was wondering is if synthroid could affect OPK results? I've never gotten a positive OPK, just a faint line under a dark control. I have a dr apt on Saturday and will ask then but wondered if you ladies had any insight. Thanks!

Re: Synthroid and OPKs

  • I take levothyroxine (generic Synthroid) for hypothyroidism. I haven't had any trouble getting positive OPK's in past months, though I seem to have missed my surge this month. I usually test 1x per day leading up to a darkening line, then 2x per day until it fades.

  • When we were trying for our daughter I was using OPK's and I was on Synthroid for Hashimoto's thyroiditis, it did not seem to affect my results.

  • I take Synthroid and it hasn't affected my OPKs.

  • Synthroid is actually supposed to be identical to the thyroid hormone T4 that it is replacing. It shouldn't interfere with anything your body does naturally (unless you overdose). So you should still experience the luteinizing hormone surge that opks test for.

As previous posters mentioned you need to test more than once a day to catch a positive. I test once a day until I see a faint line and then I start testing more frequently.

    Good luck!

  • Hypothyroidism can impact ovulation, so if your synthroid dosage is correct it shouldn't impact OPK's. However, if your TSH is still too high even on synthroid, I suppose that could impact OPK's. How high was your TSH and how long have you been taking synthroid?

  • Thanks ladies! I have been testing more than once a day. I tested with fmu, about 1pm, and then again between 56pm. I got a faint line yesterday between 56 and a faint line the day before between 56. All the rest were blank. I'm pretty sure I O'd this morning

The last time I was tested, in May, my levels were normal. I've been on synthroid since January
  • I am also hypothyroid and take a generic version of synthroid and have had positive OPKs for many cycles now.  I test twice a day, I know some women test 3x a day because they get a short surge.  How often are you testing?

ETA: I see you are testing multiple times a day.  I'm slow.
