Cloth Diapering

Handwashing while on vacation?

Hoping for a little advice. I'm going to be hand washing our Sbish fitted diapers while we're on vacation with relatives, and am not sure what kind of soap I ought to use. I've been washing with powdered Tide. We're only using these for overnight, so I'll only be dealing with pee (unless my daughter decides to surprise us). Also not sure if I even need to hand wash, if it's just pee, or if I could throw them in with her clothes. My thanks in advance!

Re: Handwashing while on vacation?

  • I would wash with clothes.

But "handwash diapers" and "vacation" don't go in the same sentence for me. If I was handwashing, I'd probably use dish soap.

Yeah, it's hardly the most restful activity.

  • One or two pee diapers is hardly the grossest thing I've washed in a load of household laundry. Wink Just don't tell anyone and they won't ever need to know.
  • I would wash them with her clothes, but maybe pre rinse them in the sink.

Fitteds are really not even the kind of diapers that are efficiently cleaned from hand washing. There is definitely no way that I would attempt to wash an ON fitted by hand, especially. Those things can be hard to get truly clean even by you washer.

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • Bring a bucket, dump and rinse out poop.  Let the dipes soak, refill bucket with whatever soap you're using, but only half way, then stomp your diapers.  I wish I had the link of the person who wrote the article.  Hmmm.  We lost power and I had to stomp some diapers.  They got really clean.

Oh wait, got it, here is the link.  I think you could modify this a lot and still get your dipes so they aren't festering in the wetbag until you get home.

For pee, I'd sneak them in the wash.

  • I used our Sbish Snapless during the flats and handwashing challenge, and handwashed them with the rest of our diapers every night. I used a washboard in the bathtub, which was very effective for moving water/detergent through the layers of cloth, and not as splashy as stomping or using a plunger.

I used liquid laundry detergent that was forumulated for handwashing, sort of like Woolite, but not (haven't seen Woolite here in the UK).

  • Yes, just bring your washboard on vacation.

That's seriously your suggestion? C'mon guys, this does not make cloth diapering look less crazy.

Okay but then seriously, good luck, because it isn't easy to handwash and really get things cleaned at home or on vacation.

She has access to a washer and is only using cloth diapers at night... I would think "use the washing machine" is slightly less crazy than "acquire and pack a washboard to use in the bathtub".

I bring my washboard on vacation...every time

Lol, NOT.  Use the washer! :)

we do not cd on vacation because the logistics often take too much time away from -- the vacation. Handwashing cd on vacation? no way. If you're concerned about a skin reaction, I'd use a disposable cd liner in a disposable diaper.

If you absolutely have to handwash, I'd buy some flats for the week.

Otherwise, since you have access to a washer (but aren't supposed to use?) I'd rinse, rinse, rinse the diaper and then sneak it in with the clothes.

Thanks to the washboard people for the laugh!
