Baby Names

Not so sure about the name I picked...

Lo is 7 weeks old I named her Lillian rose after my grandma the plan was to call her lily. Several people are calling her Lillian and I actually don't like how it sounds. Now I am wondering if I should have went with Lilliana instead of Lillian. I think it would likely be a pain to change her name at this point. Her sisters name is Isabella. Thoughts?

  • With the middle name Rose, I like Lillian better.  It just flows better.  If you plan to use the nickname Lily, then you wouldn't be calling her Lillian or Lilliana very much anyways.

  • Since her name is Lillian, you must have thought that there was a possibility people would call her that, right?

I guess if I were you, when people called her Lillian I would respond with a "we call her Lily" and leave it at that.

  • People will catch on eventually. Just make sure to always introduce her as Lily and call her Lily in front of everyone who counts. They'll pick up on it soon.

  • It's a bit of a long story Lillian was my mothers moms name. I was originally going to go with just lily but my mom thought it was too short. Plus we were looking at rose for a middle name.

We hadn't decided on a name 100 percent when I had her in fact I had a list of names that I took with me to the hospital But dh thought that was ridiculous to pull out a list and Lillian was the first name I could remember off the list. I said I wanted it somewhere in the name and so that became the name. It just seems like a very adult name for a little baby.
  • She won't be a baby for long and Lillian is a great name to grow into. I do agree Lilliana and Isabella are to matchy. I promise you will love her name when she grows into it some more, sorry you felt pressured.

  • DD has a friend named Lillian and everyone calls her Lily. Just start calling her that and others will follow suit
  • Lilliana is too much for me- to frilly.  I like Lillian better.
  • Lilliana sounds very flowery.  I like Lillian better and love the nn Lily.  I think the more you refer to her as Lily, the more others will follow suit.  They probably just love saying her full name.  It's a great name.

  • I like Lillian better with Isabella. It's a beautiful name. If you prefer Lily though just keep calling her that. It will catch on.

  • I feel you should name your child what you want her to be called. I know the rest of the board most likely disagrees but this is my opinion. Lilliana is beautiful but so is just Lily.

I disagree, because that's what my mom did for my name and I hate it.  It's great that my mom likes my name, but I would have loved to have the option as I got older to choose what I go by (I would have gone by the full name, if I could).

Not to mention that my name is frequently mispronounced in the shortened form, but never in the longer form, and it would have been so helpful to say, for example, my name is,Lillian, but I go by Lily, than to have people constantly butcher it.

  • Lillian will grow on me. I do really like lily but who knows maybe she will want to go by lillian or rose. i think it's really hard to pick a name for a child you haven't spent more than an hour with and it's more important that she likes her name than me.
