hello all! i'm new to these boards, just found out we are preggo with twins (7 weeks) following a miscarriage in late February. we feel very blessed, shocked and nervous...but happy!
my doc said that appointments for carrying twins wouldn't be any different than a regular pregnancy until after 24 weeks. anyone having more frequent ultrasounds/checkups? we had the early sono done due to the past m/c, and honestly i was hoping for appointments every couple of weeks for reassurance. the sono looked good, though, two strong heartbeats/separate sacs, but of course, i'm still very nervous.
what has been everyone else's experiences? should i request consultation with a perinatologist? additional sonos? my m/c was missed so we didn't find out until almost 12 weeks and the baby measured only about 8 weeks. i definitely do not want to wait 5 more weeks to make sure everything is ok!!!
Re: more frequent doctor's visits?
OB visits were monthly and started to be bimonthly around 28w. Growth scans have been monthly since 19w. I was recently dx'ed w mild pree and will now have NSTs 2x a week from here on out along w weekly bloodwork and I have to take my BP at home daily. I still only have office visits every 2 weeks.
A lot of it will depend on your doctor and if complications come up.
Congrats and welcome! If you saw "two separate sacs" on your first u/s, it sounds like you are carrying di/di twins, which is the lowest risk. B/c of this it doesn't sound like you'd need any extra monitoring in the early months.
It is definitely super nerve-wracking to find out about twins (and a million times more, I imagine after a loss....so sorry), but try your best not to worry. Seeing two heartbeats is a great sign!
Again, welcome aboard, and hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!
Congrats and welcome. I too had a loss and PGAL brain is killer. I had an early u/s at 6weeks, at my RE, which showed twins, I then had one for the next 3 weeks bc they were measuring so small and no heartbeats for a while. At 8weeks I was cleared to my OB and just had my 12 week apt. My OB will do a quick u/s at monthly visits instead of doppler and starting at 26weeks I will see her weekly until delivery. I called a perinatologist today and they said I had to be referred by my OB and that typically doesn't happen until 16weeks or so.
GL and welcome.

I had early u/s in the beginning. 7w and 9w with my RE, 9w1d with my OB/MFM when I was released. Then, I had the normal 12w and 20w u/s with the OB/MFM. Then my u/s started to get more frequent. 24w, 28w, 32w, and Monday will be my 36w.
Appointments were similar. I had them once a month until about 28 weeks I think, then every two weeks, and now once a week.
It's completely normal for you not to have too many appointments and u/s as long as you are not showing any extra signs of being higher risk.
I agree with PP - my appts are about 1xmonth.
For one month, between weeks 11-16 I had weekly u/s with my OB b/c I had complications with a SCH. It spoiled me a bit to see them that much - and now going from week 16 to week 20 to see them again is killing me!! My week 20 appt is with an MFM, who I believe I will see every 3 weeks and then I will continue my appts with my OB 1xmonth.
GL!!
wow, you ladies are wonderful! thank you for all the replies and information!
initially after the m/c, my doc had told me that when i got pregnant again she would sneak me in anytime just to check things out. she said she had a m/c in the past and remembered checking every day when she got pregnant again (and who wouldn't with the technology at your disposal?!).
but once i got pregnant she called me the day after the sonogram to congratulate me and that's when she said she wouldn't need to see me until week 12. and i'm thinking...what happened to sneaking me in whenever i wanted?! but, then she also said if i needed anything before that, i could call and get a sono even if i didn't see her.
so, i specifically asked how to go about doing that (one of her call nurses would schedule me no problem, the other is like going through a brick wall:). so, she said to call and tell them that i'm spotting so insurance would cover it! yes, very specifically she said to say, i'm spotting, i'm pregnant with twins and have a history of m/c and they would schedule an appointment. glad i asked the specifics of how to make it happen, i hate lying, but i also know i won't make it 5 more weeks without making sure everything is ok! i had absolutely no signs that i'd miscarried with the first pregnancy, so it was a shock to find no heartbeat and learn that they had stopped growing several weeks prior.
one of my best friends is also pregnant with twins, perfectly healthy pregnancy, no complications and she was being seen by her doc every couple of weeks and by a perinatologist on top of that. just crazy how different every office is.
thanks again ladies!
