Still smell like pee?

Hi ladies! I post on here a little bit but lurk a lot. I CD my 2 year old part time and am getting ready to CD my newborn when he/she arrives in a few short weeks.

My 2 year old has been using Flips with the Flip inserts since January, usually just 1-2 per day since daycare doesn't allow CDs. I wash 2-3 times per week and my washing routine goes like this: rinse cycle in cold then wash on a hot cycle using Method Free & Clear detergent. I then dry on a drying rack in the laundry room until dry. I throw the inserts, covers, and wet bag in all together.

I've been noticing for about a month that the inserts and sometimes the covers still have a pee stink after they are dried. Do I need to strip them? How exactly do I do this? They still look clean and white, no stains at all but have a slight pee odor. I'm not exactly sure what to do. Any help would be great!!

I really want to get this figured out better before my next baby arrives. Thanks so much!

Your first cycle should be a rinse and spin to wash out the pee an any slight poo residue. Then you should be doing a full wash cycle with an extra rinse with your detergent.


If you aren't doing a rinse and spin before you put your detergent in, then you're washing in pee water.

Also, since you're waiting to wash, you might want to try a warm rinse. I usually do this when I go 3 days.

I would start with a warm rinse, then consider a different detergent.

Grapefruit seed extract will get the smell out as well!

Sorry I should clarify, I do a rinse cycle before my wash cycle so the washer should have fresh water during the actual wash. I think I'll start with changing the temp of the water and maybe washing more frequently.

So grapeseed extract would work too? Do I just add some to the washer? Where do I get it? Is it like an essential oil?

Also, is your washer HE? If it is, make sure you're getting enough water in the machine.

Grapefruit seed, not grape seed. I got mine in the vitamin aisle at my grocery.

Thank you! I was mobile when I wrote that and meant to type grapefruit but came out wrong. I'll look for it next time I'm out and about.
