What do you do with your diapers

Hello Ladies

We have been using disposable diapers and so far we have just been using a diaper pail (with carbon filter) and a garbage bag and I take it out every day or two.  Up until now it has been fine but with it getting warmer it seems to be harder to keep the smell away.

What do you guys do.  I am thinking of the diaper genie but is it worth it?

Re: What do you do with your diapers

  • We use the diaper genie and we love it. It does a great job with the smell! We received two as gifts so we have one in DD's room and one on our main level. We can get by with only changing them once every two weeks which is nice!

  • Garbage can in the bathroom in the shower so the dogs can't get it and I take the bag out everyday.

  • I throw poopy ones out in are large garbage can right away, so the dogs can't get to it. The pee ones go in the trash in our kitchen. I haven't had a problem with that

I use our trashcan. DH takes trash out everynight and our trashcan is in a side room off the kitchen. It doesn't ever smell. I didn't really need a second trashcan just for diapers, but we live in a small house so it just seemed silly for us to get a diapergenie.

  • I love my diaper genie it works great. However, if you don't feel like going out and buying one I have heard there are a few other things you can use to keep out the smell. The first is tossing dryer sheets in the diaper pail and the second is sprinkling baking soda in the pail every so often. Hope that helped good luck.

  • We live in a 700sqft condo. . There really isn't room for anything extra, so diapers go in the kitchen trash. We don't use any diaper bags either, they go as is. Never had a smell issue. The trash can sits in the kitchen, it's not enclosed in a cabinet and has no lid. I think keeping it open air actually reduces odors

  • Diaper genie is fantastic! Got it as a gift, but even then, I think it's like $30 which is totally worth it. We take it out maybe 2 times a week and never smell any odor.

  • Love our diaper genie, we have two. It def keeps any smell out. You can get them cheap from a consignment shop and just buy the refills or sometimes BRU has the buy one get one free deal.

  • We just put the pee-pee diapers in a garbage can in baby's room. The poopy diapers go in the outside garbage ASAP. :)

  • I put them in a plastic shopping bag near the door to the garage, when I can smell it or it gets full I take it out.  Upstairs we just toss them in the trash, it gets emptied at least once a week, or sooner if it starts to smell.  Once we take them out the smell is gone.

  • We throw the poopy diapers in the Diaper Genie and the others in the kitchen or bathroom trash cans. Some people think a Diaper Genie is a waste of money but honestly it takes us a really long time to go through the bags... it's totally worth it to me. I used to have a Diaper Champ and that thing sucked. If we throw the poop diapers in a regular trash can it smells right away so even if we take the trash out each day (which I don't want to have to do) it would still be stinky that whole day.

  • Another vote for the Diaper Genie...BRU had a 2 pack (1 of the older models and 1 of the newer ones) that we got as a shower gift, so we keep 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs and they never stink. I've seen people talk about using garbage bags instead of the refills (https://www.frugallivingandhavingfun.com/2012/03/diy-diaper-genie-refills/) but we haven't tried it yet b/c it take us quite awhile to go through one cartridge and we got several at our shower.

  • We have a regular diaper pail with no filter (Arm& Hammer) I think.  I put those Febreze stick-ons in there that are supposed to be so magical in commercials.  Turns out, they really are that magical.  Works like a charm!
  • Thanks ladies I will give a few of these a shot

  • We use cloth, but I found a closed pail made the smell worse. I put her diapers in a drawstring bag now and take them down to wash every other day. There's no smell in her room with the open bag.

  • We have a Dekor in the nursery and it is changed once a week on trash day. It gets pretty ripe on day 6/7 but only when we lift the lid. I really like it and think it was a good purchase (I especially like that you can use a regular bag if you want, which we do).

However, we do most of our diaper changes downstairs, with our little diaper basket. For that we have the Arm & Hammer bags and will toss a few dirty diapers into the bag and twist it closed between uses. We keep it in our little caddy and toss it into our regular trash every other day or so. FWIW, we have never had any issues with smell with this system.

  • I buy these arm and hammer diaper pail tabs and those really help keep the odor under control.

  • Honestly, we stopped using the genie...it was annoying and the refills get pricey. We just bought a smaller stainless steel step trash can and put a plastic grocery bag in it, when it's fill we take it out to the garage. Usually gets taken out every 2 days. Trash pick up is once a week. So much easier/cheaper! The garage does get a little smelly a few days before trash pick up since it's so warm right now, but we have our garage windows open so it's not too bad.
