rib pain

hi there, i'm just about 28 weeks along in my first pregnancy, and for the last couple of day's i'v been getting really sharp pain under my bra line on the left side of my rib cage. there are times that it hurts to even breathe. just wondering if this was normal or not??

Re: rib pain

  • I've had something similar on my right side. Usually hurts after eating a lot or sitting with poor posture for a long time. It will radiate around to my back as well. My Midwife said it is likely ligament pain the one that stretches to the top of your uterus. Lying on the opposite side of the pain usually makes it go away. Otherwise, Tylenol is your friend.

  • You should check in with your doc when you have rib pain at least the first time.  Since it hurts to breathe at times, I would definitely check in.

I have had the same exact thing with both of my pregnancies from week 20 on.  It is just the organs etc pushing up onto your ribs.   You can try wearing loose clothes around your rib cage, some stretches and laying on your opposite side to ease the pain but unfortunately, it sticks around until you give birth:(  Hang in there.

Depends, could be a variety of things. I spent seven hours in the hospital last week for a severe, constant stabbing pain under the right side of my ribs that was inhibiting my breathing. An ultrasound showed that I had a bunch of trapped air bubbles over my gall bladder. It was wickedly painful and I had to sleep sitting up, but it went away in about three days. Docs said it was just because everything is so squished and advised me to eat light for a few days.

If it's not constant or comes with movement and such, I'd go with ligament pain or sore organs like pp's have said. But if it's really sharp, constant, and worse when you breathe in, it might be air bubbles. And unfortunately, they have to clear on their own. Feel better!

  • If it doesn't go away, get your doctor to look at if. I had this pain and it was my gallbladder. I had to have surgery to fix the problem. Obviously, mine was an extreme case but keep an eye out. If it hurts more after eating a heavy/greasy meal, it could be your gallbladder. Hopefully it's just your organs being pushed up!
