Baby Names

William vs Liam?

I know they are both very popular but no other names is standing out..
Which do u prefer?

William is my uncles name and Dh middle name.

Middle name is Michael.

My Dh prefers Liam so he won't be called will or bill or have any name confusion down the line..
I prefer William for a formal name esp for resume etc but we would call him Liam.
Siblings are abigail and grace.

Would that be too much?

Re: William vs Liam?

  • Why not name him William and call him Liam. If that's his preferred nickname others will use it

  • I guess because Dh prefers just Liam I feel silly pushing for William when we will call him Liam anyway but he says will and grace would be too much..r
  • I'm not a fan of doing formal names just because you think you need to. If you're not a huge William fan then just do Liam. It makes a fine stand alone name.

  • Liam is a perfectly acceptable full name and is very resume worthy. I think William if great but I don't see the point in naming him William but knowing you will call him Liam anyway. Personally, I would go with Liam. I think it works better with Abigail and Grace too.

  • I second William with the nickname Liam. It's a win for you both. I had to chuckle at the Will & Grace reference. But if you call him Liam everyone will.

  • I actually really like Liam. If this is what you will call him I'd name him that. I am normally not a fan of nn as first names; I feel Liam is a fine stand alone name.

  • I think Liam is perfect for a stand alone name if that's what you like.  I'm a fan of naming your child what you intend to call them.

  • I prefer William. Although I suppose it's a possibility he might be called Bill or Will, if his nickname is Liam, I think it's unlikely that he will suddenly want to be Bill.

I'm so over Liam - I feel like it's one of the most overused names of the decade... And we're only three years in. I would definitely go with William, between the two choices and that way you have the option of both. Especially if there are 5 other Liam's in his class.

I prefer Liam. It is fine as a stand alone name and works well in the sib set.

    I do not like William.

  • I love Liam!
  • If you name him William, but use the NN Liam, I don't see any problems with anyone calling him Bill or Will.

I am not ever a fan of nicknames as full names, including names that most people wouldn't question, like Jack. However, Liam is actually a legit name on its own an ethnic variation of William as opposed to a nickname. That being said, I don't think you can go wrong here. It works stand alone or as a nickname. My personal preference is as a stand alone.
  • That's my concern w William lol... But will and grace isn't current and will it even matter in a few years?
  • Liam!  Not a William fan.
