Re: IPod toddler Apps

  • What do you mean we are not the ones that sit our child down with an iPod BUT...

so I am not a good parent bc I let my dd and ds use my iPad all the time, my dd learns a ton from the apps and enjoys them. It keeps her mind constantly working and learns new things everyday.

  • I'm glad you use it sparingly because I do agree it's not a great way to raise a child.  Children should be active, playing, and learning social skills.  But... when we do need a break DH does the app downloads, I know he only gets free stuff so I'm not too sure what they are, but he got her a Thomas the Tank Engine puzzle game she enjoys, he also found a Mickey road race.  I found some crush the bug game, it's pretty fun since bugs freak her out so I have to do all the squishing.  She asl has a coloring app she enjoys.

BTW, what age is your LO?  We got DD a Leap Pad for her 2nd birthday to keep her busy in the stroller and she was nothing but frustrated with it the 1st few months.  I couldn't imagine letting DS do anything with the IPad now, he'd never get it.

I think that statement in the OP was less of a judgement and more of a disclaimer so she didn't get flamed by sanctimommies who think a toddler shouldn't come within ten feet of a smart phone.

DS still doesn't have any interest in apps but we do turn on kids shows on YouTube when we need him to be quiet.

I think the learning apps are pretty cool. My two year old niece can't count past three despite my SIL working with her every day. Their neighbor who was born the same week can count to thirty because of this counting app she plays with. We live in a technological age. I don't see any problem with kids learning early because computers will surely be integrated into every aspect of their lives.

Plus, someone needs to show me how to use this damn smart phone!

  • Our DD is almost 2 and she's been using our iPad for the past few months and loves some of the apps.  I think she knows how to use the iPad better than me!  She can play the games and she loves to look at the pictures and videos of her we have saved on the iPad.  It's really helped her learn to identify objects, animals, colors and shapes.

    Some of her favorite apps...

All the Toca Boca apps: Train, Trucks, Hair Salon, House, Kitchen, Band.

MusicColor and SoundTouch have been the most helpful with identifying objects.

Endless ABC has even helped her with letters.

There's also a series of apps made by the ABA that are very educational and fun for kids.

  • For free..The Fischer price apps are popular in our house. I also like baby learns but I think they are iPad only they are free every once in a while Check out smartappsforkids.com. They list out free and discounted apps daily. I have gotten some good deals through their notifications.
