My DD was discharged 33 days after birth (born at 33 weeks) and they made me take the hat off the week she was discharged. They wanted to make sure she could regulate her own temp before they sent her home.

DD is still in the hospital but we only put the hat on when she's cold.  Otherwise, as PP said, she can hold her own temp.  And we just adjust accordingly.
