Spelling of Amelia

So we really like Amelia, but I ran across Emilia today and I love the  potential nn of Emmy. I don't want to name her Emmy because I think it's too cutesy. What do you think? Are they pronounced the same in your opinion?

Our other top choice is Colette.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: Spelling of Amelia

  • I actually do prefer Emilia, and I pronounce them almost the same, but not quite.   With Emilia, I tend to say Eh-milia, while Amelia is like Uh-milia, at least to me and most others where I'm from.

  • I prefer Amelia and they are pronounced different in my head. I would go with Emily instead if you preferred the E.

  • Btw, I've also heard people pronounce Emilia as Emily-uh, but I assume that's not as common. I could be wrong though.

    Agreed with pronunciation. To me they are two different names, I know an Emilia and I've never associated her name with Amelia.

  • Amelia-  uh-meal-ya

    Emilia   Em-uh-lee-a

     That's how I would pronounce the two.

  • Amelia = a-MEE-lee-a or a-MEEL-ya

    Emilia = e-MEEL-yah

    They're so very similar! I love all of the names on your list. :)

  • We seriously considered Emilia for the same reason as you (liked the nickname Emmy), but in the end I decided I didn't want her to have to spell her name/correct people all the time.

  • Thanks for your opinions, I realize they are different names. I guess my title was off. I just want to make sure that other people pronounce it the way I do in my head. Colette is still a front runner and we have time. Thanks again!

    I prefer Amelia over Emilia.

    I find that most people that choose Emilia because they like Emmy.  It is becoming very popular in my world.  I do like Emmy but I don't like Emilia.  It looks forced to me.

    I LOVE Colette.

    Emilia = Emma-lee-uh for me.

    If you're looking for the Uh-meel-yuh pronunciation, I'd go with Amelia. Ditto Emma/Emily/Emmeline if you want to use the non Emmy.

    I pronounce them the same but think of them as completely separate names. I prefer Emilia out of the two. I like Colette even better though.

    1. Amelia and Emilia are different names.2. They have a completely different history/cultural background.3. They are pronounced differently.

    Agree with every point mj.reilly said. They are not just spelling variants...THEY ARE DIFFERENT NAMES.

    Yep got it, thanks. If you read my pp you would see I titled the post wrong. Sorry if my mistake offended you. Lol.

  • Meh. I say them both pretty much the same. Maybe with Amelia its more of an UH sound for A, and Emilia more of an EH sound. But overall, very similar.

  • I actually don't mind either. If you think you will call her by a nick name then Emilia is probably better.

    I have a friend named amalia. It's a very pretty name too!

    Agree with all of the above, except I like Emelia over Emilia.

  • I pronounce them only a teeny bit differently. Amelia (uh-MEEL-ee-uh) and Emilia (eh-MEEL-ee-uh). I think they are both beautiful! Love the nn Emmy. Also love Colette. Good choices! I like your style.
