Breastfeeding

weaning help please!

hi ladies ... in desperate need for some help!

my daughter is 21 months, and i have been breastfeeding her on demand from the very beginning.  it's really not such a problem during the day -- i pump while i'm at work for my husband (who stays at home) to give her the next day, and when i'm home in the afternoon/evening, i love the time close to her since i haven't seen her during the day. the problem is at night ...

we co-sleep, and she pretty much uses my breasts as pacifier at night -- and it's just gotten to the point that i can't take it anymore.  i can't move in bed because then she wakes up.  my nipples in the morning are raw and painful.  and if she has a nightmare or is dreaming of food, she starts chewing on my nipple -- that that hurts with those teeth!

so i guess i'm looking for anyone who can give my some insight as to how to wean her at night.  i'm not looking to stop the co-sleeping, or really the one or two actual feedings we have together -- just help at night!!

    Read that.

And you can quit pumping and still nurse when together. It really sounds like you're stretched too thin and need to take care of yourself. Between 1 and 2+, nursing becomes less about nutrition and more about the relationship/limit setting. You need to find a balance where nursing is enjoyable for both of you, not just her.

  • I went through the exact thing and at the same age. Unfortunately it just took alot of fussy nights to wean. When he tried to feed, i would try and get him distracted by a movie and say they were sleeping so he couldnt feed . Of course he would do some crying but we would just try to comfort him by snuggling and eventually he would pay attention to the movie and sooner or later he would pass out. I started it off slow, working on the actual going to sleep process and then through the entire night. After a week or so he just stopped. It also helps try and encourage a drink cup at night instead. It gives them an alternative. Try having your own drink as well so they can copy u or heck you can even take a sip out of their cup to help encourage them using it even more. Goodluck!! Itll eventually happen!!

  • I must say though... I had weaned him during the day time a month prior so i am not sure how it will take since she still feeds during the day as well. If she takes rhe bottle during the day, offer it at night as well.
