Traveling with freezer stash?

In a few weeks we are moving to a new state! I'm guessing the drive will take somewhere between 6 and 7 hours depending on how DS does in the car. I have about 100 oz of frozen milk that I'm hoping to safely transfer; has anyone done this? What did you use? A cooler? Dry ice? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Re: Traveling with freezer stash?

  • I have not but I would take empty milk jugs or plastic juice containers and fill them with water and freeze them. Then put these in your cooler, add your frozen milk, and then cover with ice. That should get you through but i would double check to see if you need more ice when stopping for gas or lunch!

  • We're moving 1000 miles in July.  My LC said as long as it's all packed together, you don't even need ice.  You can pack newspaper in the open areas to insulate.  She said it would be fine even for our 20 hour drive!  She said those white styrofoam coolers work as well as anything.

  • I traveled 7 hours and by the time I got to my destination the milk was slushie.  I'm not sure if it was good or not having partly thawed but I didn't want to take a chance, so I tossed it.  I packed it in a cooler with ice and ice packs.
