Upgrading/Downgrading breast milk

I previously thought that it was ok to move refrigerated breast milk to the freezer if its been in the fridge for 5 days or less. Then I just read something about the rules of "upgrading and downgrading" breast milk. It says that you can downgrade by moving milk from freezer to fridge but that you can never upgrade, by moving milk from fridge to freezer. Do you all follow this rule?

  • Nope. I always freeze after storing in the fridge.

  • Never. I have always heard you can store by succession...room temp, fridge, and than freezer.

I disagree. We leave it in the fridge for up to 5 days before freezing, but once it's been frozen you need to use within 24 hours of thawing.

  • I've also always understood it to be the opposite... that it's fine to freeze milk after a few days in the fridge, but that once milk is thawed it must be used within 24 hours because the freezing and thawing leaves it more susceptible to spoiling.

I agree with all of you, that's what I've always heard and done.
I came across this website...now that I look at it more closely, its not a breastfeeding website, just "about.com".

  • I agree with pp's that it's fine to go from fridge to freezer. I try to smell milk before giving it to the baby anyway, but going frm fridge to freezer won't spoil the milk. However, storing milk for longer breaks down some of the extra beneficial elements of the milk that boost baby's immune system and etc. the longer milk is frozen, the more those antibodies decrease... And refrigerating then freezing has the same effect. Your milk won't be bad... It just won't be AS good for baby. I don't worry about it because DS gets fresh milk the majority of the time.
