Posted last night about my boy cat being diagnosed diabetic... I'm having a hard time with this. Like, sad cried multiple times today.
I don't think we can afford the vet trips needed to get his levels regulated, then the cost of insulin. I bought the food today... it was hella pricey. Since we have 2 cats they both need to be on the same diet. That's two times as hella pricey.
I researched a bit today. And a crap ton of people have commented on stuff saying basically, "You should never own a pet again if you can't afford to spend every dime on them until they die". Then I felt like sh!t. Because.... if the uber expensive cat food can't help him, I think we're gonna have to put him down. Unless anyone of you fine ladies want a old @ss diabetic cat?
I didn't pick these cats up from the shelter. I didn't say one day, "Hey! We should go get a cat!". I took them in when others didn't want them anymore. I've spent many dollars, time and love on both of them. I can't imagine taking him in to put him to sleep and I'm crying while I type this. But what am I supposed to do?! Pay my mortgage or buy insulin for my cat?
I'm so sad.
Re: Diabetic Cat = Heavy Heart
And here's a pic of my sweet little guy... in his healthier days.
I have no words of wisdom or advice, but I am sooo, so, so, so sorry for what you're going through. He is adorable.
Whatever you end up doing, don't let people shame you for it. It's clear you love your kitty, and he has been in a warm and caring home since you took him in. Nobody can truly plan for a crisis.
I'm sorry
People who say you should have thousands saved are unreasonable. Many people don't have thousands saved period.
You're a good cat owner who loves her cat. You're not in denial and are already thinking of HIS best interests. I'm sorry.
Just a few alternatives for you...
I work at an animal hospital and some local shelters will help you pay for unexpected medical things, such as being diagnosed with diabetes. It would be worth looking into.
Another option would be to see if your vet takes care credit. That is a credit card that charges no interest if paid off in 6 month.
Also, talk to the vet hospital. My hospital will not euthanize an otherwise healthy animal for a disease that can be fixed/controlled. We will work with you on prices, and we will offer to let you surrender the cat to us or a shelter. We would then stabilize the kitty and adopt it out. This obviously depends on the age and overall health of the kitty however.
The first few months when trying to stabilize a diabetic kitty is hard and overwhelming, but it does get easier. Occasionally a cat will also revert and no longer need insulin etc.
