Baby Names

Hawaiian boy name decision.

My husband is Hawaiian and we have decided to go with Kalani or Kainoa for our boy. I really prefer Kainoa but he has a first cousin, who he never sees, with that name. He wants Kalani but I think it sounds too feminine. What do you guys think? I appreciate any opinions. Thanks for your time!

Re: Hawaiian boy name decision.

  • I love Kalani and don't think it's too feminine

  • I love Kainoa, I say go for it! Any other names to consider? Kanai, Kanoa, Kaikane, Kalino, Kamani?
  • How is Kainoa pronounced? Ki-No-ah? (The first syllable rhymes with eye... as in the name Kai?)

  • I know a kalani, she's a cute little girl. I really think it sounds like a girls name.

  • Kalani because it seems easier to pronounce.
  • What about just the name Kai?  I have a close friend with that name and I've loved it for YEARS.  If we have a boy this time, his name will actually be Lucas Kai.

But, of your choices, I like Kainoa best.

  • Kai is probounced like eye with a k in front. Noa is just like Noah. Thanks everyone for your input.

  • Hubby is totally against it. I like that and Koa. He said no way. I figure this is a good compromise because it kinda sounds like Kai and Koa.

    I totally agree!

Okay. I like it. I think I like it more than Kalani as Kalani does sound A LITTLE feminine to me. I'd just be concerned about how much it will be mispronounced.

  • I live in Hawaii, and though I'm not Hawaiian, I've noticed that not many Hawaiian boys have "i" sounds at the end of their names -- at least not in my classes. Kalani therefore sounds a little feminine to me, and always makes me think of Kalani High School. Just a thought...

Kainoa is handsome. You mentioned that you also like Koa -- perhaps Kaikoa or Kanekoa?

  • I'm not familiar with Hawaiian names, but I would assume Kalani is a girl's name.
