Cloth Diapering

Charlie's Soap users, please come in...

I have an HE washer and will be a first time CDer sometime in the next few weeks.

I plan on using Charlie's soap and reading their directions, they recommend disinfecting with a peroxide, vinegar, or bleach rinse.  Can I just put the vinegar in the fabric softener compartment of the washer...I think that releases only during the rinse cycle?  And then run an extra rinse?  Please let me know if I am thinking correctly or there is something better to do?  Thanks!

  • I use Charlie's also with a front loader. I didn't know that they recommend using those. I know that it is not usually recommended to use bleach on the diapers (maybe on the inserts once in a great while, but be sure to rinse A LOT after). I have used vinegar to help strip them and reduce ammonia odor, but I didn't find it to be that effective. I added the vinegar right into the main detergent compartment for the last rinse cycle (I ran about 3 or 4 extra rinse cycles because I was stripping them).

I would say that you shouldn't usually need to add anything extra.

  • We switched all laundry to Charlie's when we started doing CD for DD. I never had to use any of those, never had to do anything special. Our wash routine is one wash on cold with Charlie's, one on hot. What I DID do every few loads was hang to dry in bright sun (then toss in dryer for a few minutes to soften). That seemed enough to disinfect and get out stains--the sun is really good for that. So I never worried about adding anything else to the wash. And we've never had issues. BTW--switching all wash to Charlie's does seem to help with any residue issues, which were the only negatives I'd ever heard of Charlie's (of the diapers absorbing residue from other wash loads). I don't know if adding these things helps if you're using different detergents, but otherwise I would have found it unnecessary.
