Trying to Get Pregnant

Can I start temping mid-cycle?

I'm trying to get a handle on this temping but I'm still really confused. I've read the tutorials on FF, started adding to my calendar on FF and downloaded Charting Your Way to Conception but I'm still a bit confused. I know I need a BBT thermometer and to take my temp at the same time each day. My cycle is very off right now because I missed my last period (or it's late). How do I even know if I'm ovulating? Is there any way to link my FF calendar here to better show?

Took my last active BC pill on March 30th

Got first period off the pill April 28-30

Haven't seen AF or any signs since. Took a pg test just in case: BFN

Since I have no clue when I'm ovulating or when AF is due now, can I just start temping tomorrow morning? I don't get how to read the chart either. I know you ladies are full of knowledge and would appreciate some help. TIA!

Re: Can I start temping mid-cycle?

  • Sounds like you're on the right track, downloading the Charting book and doing the FF tutorials.  I honestly thought it would be overwhelming, but I found it easier to start figuring stuff out once I got going.  Talking/thinking about it in the abstract was tougher, when I started having actual data to look at, it really helped make things more clear.

I would start temping now, it can't hurt and can get you in the habit.  I believe FF has instructions on sharing your chart, which is important if you want to ask for any chart stalks, I can't remember off hand how to do it.  I would also suggest you consider adding OPKs, it really helped me but giving me a better overall picture, as well as a cue to really start HIO!  Good luck!

  • Currently there's no way to know if you are, or did, ovulate.  I agree with PP, there's no harm in getting in the temping habit now.  If you haven't ovulated yet, it's still possible to catch your surge.  Once you have a FF account, you can link your chart by going to Sharing > Get Code.  Copy and paste that into a post here, or into your siggy.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks everyone! Unfortunately I don't have a bbt thermometer yet so I'll have to use a digital one in the meantime. Just ran to cvs and they didn't have any. I'm on mobile but will link my chart to my siggy ASAP.

If you have a Walmart close by you might want to check there too. That's where I got my BBT

BTW, which brand do you gals recommend for a BBT? I'm browsing Amazon.com and hardly any have good reviews. Does it need to measure two tenths (i.e. 98.65) or is one ok (i.e. 98.6)?  I have a home thermometer that measures 98.6 type degrees.

  • Thanks! And I just realized I failed at math terminology by saying two tenths when it should've been one one-hundredth...haha. It's been a while since I've taken Math ;)

I agree with PP.  Just wanted to add about reading the chart.  The tutorials on fertilityfriend are great at explaining.  But the basic premise is that your temps before ovulation will be lower, and your temps after ovulation will be higher.  So you know when you see a sustained rise that you probably ovulated.  Of course theres a little more to it than that, but you'll learn as you go.  Once you have a complete chart under belt, you'll probably have an AHA!! moment where it all kinda makes sense (at least I did lol).  HTH!

Thanks! That's very helpful. I added my first temp this morning! DH was woken by the beeping, whoops!

  • LOL... yeah, definitely woke DH with the beeps before... mine slapped his alarm clock though!  The sooner you start charting and keeping track of it all, the clearer the overall picture you'll have.  Good luck!
