Trying to Get Pregnant

Worrying....

My husband and I have only been ttc since March and it's already felt like such a roller coaster. I had been on bc for four years so my cycle's been a little unpredictable. The last two were around 30 days so I should have ovulated May 19th. Last week I started feeling really tired all the time and felt so bloated, but I didn't want to get my hopes up so I chalked it up to PMS. My period was supposed to start last Sunday and still nothing. I took pregnancy tests Tuesday and this morning and both were negative. :( now I'm driving myself nuts trying to figure out whether I have IBS or POS or something else that may have caused a missed/late period. I know I won't get an answer till I talk to my doctor, but I think I'm going to give it another week. Just want to know I'm not alone with these feelings. *sigh*

Re: Worrying....

  • Are you temping or anything? Your cycle will be really crazy for awhile after you get off BC. It's completely normal. No reason to assume you're ill unless you have other symptoms.

Test weekly or until you get your period. If no period in 60 days, see your doctor.

Sometimes you just ovulate later than you think you should. If you have only been trying since March, your body could still be regulating yourself from bcp. It can take time and it doesn't seem like there has been much time for you.

You should try charting your bbt to help you confirm when you actually ovulate. Use fertility friend (link in my ticker).

  • Well, I sure hope you don't have "piece of shiit".

Strongly suggest you read the blog tbttgp.wordpress.com. Also, charting your BBT will tell you when you actually ovulate.

Also (again)' it can take your body some time to regulate coming off BC.

  • You're not alone, I think we all get like that. Just try not to let your mind run with things -- unless you are charting your BBT, you never really know if/when you ovulated. Read the newbie blog at the top of the page, and stick around -- these gals will teach you A LOT. Good luck to you and your husband!

  • OK...first step...calm down.  Your cycle is whatever it is and freaking out about it won't help anything.  Try temping, do some reading about how it all works and just keep it moving.  You will feel more in control and hopefully have a better experience.  Good luck to you!

Haha Yup...my hubby always uses it in reference to a crappy old car being a POS.  Made me giggle.

OP, you're way too early in the game to be freaking out about things and going to the doctor.  You ovulated late, big deal.  It happens to most of us at some point, and is very likely to happen in the months coming off of BC.  Just because your last two cycles were 30 days and now you're 'late' doesn't mean that all of a sudden you might be ill or have PCOS and need to run to your doctor.  Be patient.  I had cycles that were all over the place for several months after coming off of BC, including not even getting my withdrawal bleeding for a full month after my last pill.  It happens.

Get an account with Fertility Friend.  Do the free tutorials.  And start charting/temping so you can figure out when you've actually O'd, that helps you to know when you might actually be 'late'.

  • I completely understand the worrying... and the roller coaster...

My husband and I were married in September, but because we're both 30, we started trying right away.  In December, I was one day late, (according to a Period & Ovulation app I had put on my phone), then I was two days late, then three days late... At three days late, it was Christmas, so I decided to test.  Negative.  Okay, no biggie, keep waiting, keep trying... Then I was a week late, and that was unusual, because even after being on BCPs for 3 years (but quitting last June and starting prenatal vitamins) my periods had been pretty regular, if not early.  So I took another test.  Negative.  At this point, it was frustrating... I was like "Either give me a Postive, or a Period damnit!!!" Then my period started a couple days later.  That wasn't too rough, thankfully, because we'd only been trying a couple of months.  After that, I read up on cervical mucus, and what to look for in signs of ovulation.  I also heard that those Period & Ovulation apps are total crap, because every woman's body is different.  So I've ditched that, and just started paying more attention to my body.  However, still no luck.  I switched jobs, and my mom thought that would make a world of difference, because I would be stressing less.  I am definitely feeling less stressed. Our new insurance kicks in on the 1st, so I am going to totally buy the ovulation kits, and give that a shot... I'm just so ready to be pregnant... and the longer we go without a pregnancy, the harder it's getting to squash those scary infertility thoughts.  But, even if you end up in the same boat as me, DON'T GIVE UP HOPE!!! (Hope is my middle name, after all)... even as difficult as it's getting.  :-)

The only thing I can say is, just keep communicating with your doctor, keep taking the prenatals, keep trying.

After my negatives, I just don't let myself get too excited (but I don't get negative either), but just wait, patiently, and praying.

Also, don't feel bad if people in your life get pregnant and you don't feel so excited.  So far, I'm okay with my friends/family who are in a good place in their lives to welcome a new soul into their lives.  But I have a cousin who is a total mess.  I'm not sure she's ever kept a job longer than a month, no consistant partner, posted pictures of her smoking pot on FB... then she gets pregnant.  And the further she got into the pregnancy, the harder it got to hear about... I had to hide her from my FB feed, because it just made me angry, sad, frustrated... It's not the mature response to situation, and I do pray that this baby girl she now has changes her life for the better.  That she gets her act together to not only provide for herself, but also for the new little blessing in her life that I would give anything to have in my own.  But, you can't feel bad for feeling that way, you know? We shouldn't be punished for being where we should be... You know?

I hope this all hopes... If nothing else, it feels good for me to share.

    Thank you.

Not all ovulation apps are created equal. Fertility friend is pretty great. If you're using OPKs or will soon, I recommend starting to temp and recording it in FF. That will give you much more of an idea of what is happening. FF isn't based off averages, but off the info you enter.

  • I was on the pill for about 15 years and we are on month 9 now of TTC.  My first cycles coming off the pill were both over 60 days and anovulatory.  Then I had a nice 35 day ovulatory cycle.  Then back to anovulatory.  I did a lot of reading, lurking, research, etc, and then scheduled a pre-conception visit with my OB after about 6 months of trying and ovulating once during that time.   That was when I found out I had PCOS along with my previous history of endometriosis and just over a month ago was referred to an RE and have been told our best shot of getting pregnant is going to be IVM.

I didn't wait the standard year, but I also knew I had a good reason to find out what was going on because of my previous history and all the other symptoms I had going on.  But don't just rush to the doc before giving yourself that time for your body to adjust and temping/charting/OPKs etc to make sure you know what is really going on.  I really learned a lot lurking here and reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility and by getting an account with FF.

Even if you have no issues like PCOS or endometriosis, TTC is still a roller coaster.   And sometimes you just have longer cycles or anovulatory ones.  Not everyone is blessed with a body and cycles that are like clockwork.

It is hard, but try to have patience and starting doing what the other ladies have suggested.  Give it some time, but also listen to your gut instincts.  I am glad I did, but had I not come in with charts and armed with knowledge, I would have been told "go keep trying".

I signed up after seeing all you guys talk about doing FF!!! :-) Yay!!! I need to start taking BBTs but I have already started recording my CM.  Tonight, I'm going to start their training courses, just so I can get an even better grip on it...

    You guys are AWESOME!! :-)

That can't be easy... For four and a half years, I lived 8 hours from my mom, and I definitely had bouts of seriously missing my parents.  I now live 2 hours from them, and I'm so glad.  But my 8 hours is no biggie compared to your 700 miles! Sending HUGS
