"Rebirthing" for Latch Issues - Anyone tried this?

Rebirthing - basically using bathwater to simulate labor/birth for a baby.. it is supposed to help the baby learn to latch.

We talked about this at the breastfeeding support group I went to this morning, and I think it's pretty fascinating.  I would like to try it.  Anyone have experience with this?

Re: "Rebirthing" for Latch Issues - Anyone tried this?

  • I think the label "rebirthing" is kind of strange when it sounds like it's just taking the baby into the bath with you to relax them and try latching...?  Seems like it'd be worth a try if there aren't any anatomical issues preventing latching.
  • Well, it sounded crazy with the "rebirth" thing...but yes.  My LC suggested this with DS1 when he was too fussy to eat.  We've fed in a dark tub many times. :)  It didn't magically fix any latching issues, but it did calm him enough to eat.

  • We didn't do one with water, but my LC did have us do a rebirthing kind of thing. It helped a little but we still needed to work on the latch. Lots of practice and him getting stronger as he got older and finally at six and a half weeks he got it. Hang in there!
