3rd Trimester

Anyone deal with abcess tooth during pregnancy?

My tooth first got infected about 2 years ago. I treated the infection but never got it taken care of. I had it looked at about a year and a half ago when I became pregnant with DD to make sure it was ok and they said everything looked fine to wait until after pregnancy. So, now I can feel it starting to come back, I woke up a little swollen, can feel a small bump on my gum. However, i'm not in pain, just sensitive to touch on mouth and nose area, which leads me to think it may just go away. I have every intention of finally getting it taken care of after my pregnancy, just hoping it can hold off a few more weeks....any advice?

  • I'd go to the dentist and see what they recommend.  I've heard a lot of bad stories with infections in the gum getting in to your blood stream and causing all kinds of issues.  Better just be safe then sorry.  I just went b/c I knew I needed a crown (that I'm holding off on until the baby comes) and was having some soreness in my jaw, turns out it was nothing to worry about and they didn't' even charge me for the visit... being pregnant has its advantages :)  Good Luck!

  • Definitely go to the dentist!  Have him call your OB.  They may can prescribe 'Miracle Mouthwash' or something.  I had to have a root canal during my first pregnancy.  It's very important to monitor and take care of tooth/mouth infections during pregnancy!!!!
  • Do a salt water squish every morning and after every meal:
--Water as hot as you can stand it
-- Salty as you can stand it
-- Swish for about a minute at a time then spit

That should help disinfect the area. It will not feel nice or taste nice.

I would go to the dentist and have them look at it. They may have some antibiotics that you can take that are pregnancy safe. An infection could be very dangerous for you here in third trimester. I would at least see if they want you to take something.

  • Go to the dentist. Don't play with your health when it comes to an abscessed tooth.

  • Thanks everyone. I am going to see if they can get me in today.

  • Definitely see a dentist, but also, if you're not already using one, try a waterpik--a good one that plugs to wall, not a battery powered one. Good luck!

I work at a dental office, I suggest going to the dentist for sure. If it is an abscess, they may be able to prescribe an antibiotic to hold you off until you've given birth. But if its bad enough, you may need a root canal. Especially if there is a bump on your gum, it could be a draining fistual, where the infection is coming to a head. It will be hard to officially diagnose it since xrays aren't an option while pregnant. Normally, dental work is fine while pregnant, although the 2nd trimester is the best time to have work done. But the novacaine is safe and will not interfere with the baby at all. But definitely go to the dentist!!!
