Only uneducated people having kids these days?!?!

Only uneducated people having kids these days?!?!

Today while I was waiting at the optometrists office this elderly woman started talking about how intellectual people aren't having children these days; only the uneducated because they're broke and can't afford to even go to the movies or anything so all they do is have sex... I like to think it wasn't directed at me and she was just some crazy old lady but it took a lot to not clear my throat and glare at her. I mean, I don't want to pick a fight with an old lady but really?!?!

Re: Only uneducated people having kids these days?!?!

  • Hahaha. Old lady better be prepared for a swift kick in the shins. She's right tho, I mean I only have a bachelors degree from Suffolk University and am working toward my masters, and my husband has a bachelors degree from Florida State but we're both clearly uneducated and poor and that's why we procreated.

  • What she said was rude but I do think uneducated people often make bad decisions which might involve children that they can't afford.
  • Lol! She sounds like she has a touch of dementia.

Not completely related, but I always joke with SO that it's so hard to get sitters, we just sit at home, get drunk, and screw. And that's why we have so many kids. So, essentially it's a self perpetuating cycle.

I have read that educated people have fewer children and wait longer to have children. But what she said is extreme!!!
  • I have heard this before. Maybe this is what she meant but it came out wrong, very wrong?

  • I would have probably said yeah, my DH and I got bored annoying each other so we decided to make a 3rd person to annoy...but I'm site she's just a crabby lady with toothy illegitimate grand kids. My grandma probably would have said the same! I'm the first of her side to have a baby AFTER marriage and AFTER college! And I'm one of the youngest of 13!!
  • I know what she's referencing regarding the difference in the number of children people of different socioeconomic status have but I'm not sure why she brought it up not 10 feet from an obviously pregnant woman. Pretty bold assumption especially in a college town!

This...but that was rude for her to speak so loudly about this topic with mixed company. It would make any pregnant woman feel uncomfortable, educated or not.

  • I would have told her to say that to my Masters Degree.

I think sometimes old people think they can say whatever they want because they're old.  Not cool dude.

  • Interesting, but not surprising that some older people feel this way. However, we talk often with my in-law's that overall it seems that most people are much older and having kids these days compared to generations before us.  For example we are in our mid-thirties and our parents, grandparents, etc. were at least in the early twenties.  I know this isn't always the rule, but overall it seems that people wait until they have their education done (I have a bachelors and a masters) or some work experience or money put away in the bank for security, Sounds smart to me.

You're sure she wasn't just discussing the finer plot points of Idiocracy?

I thought the same thing. There are so many posts on this board that make me think similar thoughts (Ahem - the overbearing grandmother...)

This is probably my biggest UO...people having kids when they probably shouldn't, then coming on here to complain how difficult their life is.

    I'm on your team!
