Birthday Party Vent

I love my mom, I really do. Ordinarily she's great and I love being around her but other times she makes me want to pull my hair out...

We live about 8 hours away from any family and this year for DH's vacation we're going to our home town (where both sides live, thankfully). While there we're planning on celebrating DD's 2nd birthday. On Saturday we'll be having a party at my Dad and step-mom's and on Sunday there'll be one at my mom and Step-Dad's.

The issue: Her friends (from the country club) are invited but MY friends aren't invited (all 6 of them)... Seriously. She wants to "Keep the party small". Now don't get me wrong, I do really love her friends, but it's not my mom's birthday party, it's DD's and none of her friends have children where as mine do... DD will be the ONLY child there amongst 15-20 some-odd adults. I'm also going to be paying for the majority of the food and decorations, as well as the set up AND I'll be the one asked the clean the WHOLE huge house beforehand (just like last year) while 6 months pregnant... *sigh*

Am I overreacting? Thankfully my Dad and Stepmom will probably be cool with the extra people at their party but c'mon, this is so dumb. DD is not a toy to be shown off... I look forward to when I can just do a party at a park or something and invite whoever I want.

Re: Birthday Party Vent

  • You are definitely not over reacting. It sounds like you need to put your foot down and remind your mom who's party it is and who's putting in all the money and effort. Sorry you are having a rough time. I hope it all works out.

  • On the one hand, it's a bit weird that she wants a bday party for your dd with no other kids around. But on the other hand it sounds like you'll get to see your friends and have a more kid friendly party on Sunday, so I wouldn't really care, honestly. Would you invite your friends to both parties otherwise?

  • I would be irritated.  But it sounds like something my MIL has done in the past.  At least your dad and step-mom are okay with you inviting your friends to their house.
