Breastfeeding

Supply drop at 8 months

I work full time and pump three times per day. My son eats 12 oz while I am at work and I have always pumped JUST enough maybe a few ounces extra. This week I have only been pumping 10 oz during the day. I am not ready to wean yet so this is really discouraging. I plan to add a night pumping session. Any other suggestions?

I drink all the time and I take fenugreek 3 times per day. He started solids at 6 months and eats two to three times per day.

  • Similar boat as you.  I have been noticing a decrease in my supply for about the last month as well, but he has also begun to eat more solids (he's 9 months now).  He's more interested in foods these days and has even begun to have the breakfast and lunch provided at daycare (no more baby food!).

Does he ever seem like he wants more from you when you are nursing?  My son will nurse well for about 5 minutes a side before getting distracted by things, but there are times when he will go longer, so I figure he's hungrier then.

I do also add a pumping session after he's down for the night if I feel like it's been a particularly light day as well.

  • You can try drinking Mother's Milk tea. I drink 5 cups a day when my supply is low. And eating lactation cookies.

I pump before I go to bed, and also wake up at 2 am and pump now that my son is sleeping 10-12 hours a night.

  • My daily pumping output is anywhere between 13 oz and 24 oz! That is pumping two times per day at the same time. My point is it is common for there to be variability in your output, so I wouldn't stress.

The 8 month supply drop is common. Increase your water an calories if you haven't already. Try oatmeal daily and maybe a dark beer if you like it. Two things really helped me. 1/ I power pumped every night for a week. 20 minute on, 10 off, 10 on, 10 off, 10 on. 2/ I quit worryin about getting exactly enough. She eats 3 solid meals a day plus 2 snacks. If she's an ounce or 2 shirt one day, it's not really going to hurt her. I thought the decrease in stress really helped me. GL.
