Baby Names

Adeline

Adeline was my great-grandmother's name, with the "ine" pronounced as in Caroline (rather than Carolyn).  It's sticking out as a candidate on the list of girl names right now, so I thought I get some feedback.

My only concerns are 1) might often get pronounced "Adelyn", and 2) does it sound a little made up?  I didn't make it up obviously, but I'm worried it sounds like I just chopped the M off the beginning of Madeline.

Thoughts?

You'll get some add.uh.lyn pronunciations for sure, but Madeline has the same problems.

Honestly, this name feels like the new rightthissecond name.  I see it here a fair amount.  That popularity kinda kills it for me.

I didn't know it was a rising-popularity name!  Ugh, people stealing my great grandmother's name... how rude ;)

Yeah, I think it's pretty popular around me too so I wouldn't be concerned since folks are used to hearing it.

It's a nice name though. Don't let popularity keep you from choosing something you like.

  • I think it's a great name.  I'm a member of Sweet Adelines International, a group of thousands of women worldwide who sing barbershop.  There's an old barbershop song called Sweet Adeline, so it's definitely not a new, made-up name!

  • 1. Eh, just correct people. NBD

    2. no, it doesn't sound made up at all to me

I like it. you can always have a NN of Addie

  • I had a boss named Adeline once who was a royal biitch.

Other than that, I like it!  Nice to see some lovely old-fashioned names making a comeback.

Yes I agree with the above.

I think it's cute! Especially if it has family significance. Good luck!

  • Yes it's popular, but I like it. I much prefer the line ending over the lyn. And yes, you will have to correct but no big deal.

  • DH's Great Grandmother was also named Adeline.

We know a three year old named Adeline (no relation).

I don't know anyone that messes up the pronunciation.  I think it is a beautiful, classic name.  Not to be shortened to Addie or Addy, imo.

  •      I was down between Adeline and Adelynn for our DD.  We went with Adelynn for both sentimental reasons and because of the pronunciation.  Keep in mind that Adeline kind of sounds like a cell phone advertisement jingle: "Add a line for 9.99!" I just couldn't go with that name for that reason.  I didn't want my daughter to grow up with a name that little kids will make into an annoying rhyme (I had to live with it throughout childhood...still do, occasionally, and it's very annoying), so I purposefully chose a name that kids couldn't do that to.  Also, be aware that Adeline used to be a well known song, and more than one person will feel obligated to start singing it to her for some reason (I also live through this...).
People say they've never heard of the name Adelynn, but they always say that it's beautiful.  I'd imagine Adeline would get the same response, although more people have probably heard it so they wouldn't think it's made up.
