Toddlers: 24 Months+

Camping! Sleeping arrangements

Hey All!

Just wondering if anyone has experience tent camping with a 24/25 month old.  WE camped last summer when DD was 14 months and she slept in a pack n play.  Now that DD is in a toddler bed I am wondering if it would make more sense to have her sleep on an air mattress.

What do you guys do when camping?

Re: Camping! Sleeping arrangements

  • We last went when DD was 28 months. She had her own air mattress. She usually ended up in our bed by the end of the night. Possibly because she was cold, possibly because she kept rolling off of her air mattress. I wouldn't recommend a twin sized for a toddler!

  • We're in the same situation. Last year, he slept in a PnP in the trailer. This year, I think I'm going to just buy him a twin air mattress and sleeping bag and we'll sleep in the tent.

  • Our first camping trip with DS was when he was 14 months.  We had him in a pack and play.  When he was 18 months, we got him his own air mattress / sleeping bag.  This has worked well, except that sometimes he likes to roam, and getting him to take a nap is tricky.  We went camping this past weekend with DS and DD.  DS in his sleeping bag was no problem (he's 3 now) and DD was fine in the PNP (10 months).

In conclusion, get her a sleeping bag and/or air mattress :)

  • We don't camp with mattresses. Sleeping bags on the bottom of the tent?

  • We have not camped with the girls yet, but our plan for camping this summer is 20 month old in the PNP and 3 year old on a single air mattress with sleeping bag.The air mattress we have for DD1 is similar to this:

She's slept on it before and since it's barely 2 inches thick she doesn't even notice when she rolls off :P

We used to be hard core campers, but the ground is too hard for us now.  I suppose DD could be on the ground, but I'd like her to have some padding.

If it has sides, yes. Or if you're going to line it with pool noodles or something to prevent rolling. If not I'd go with something larger, like a full.

  • We just camped this past weekend with our 24 month old. He did fine in his pnp. He is still in a crib at home. We just made sure to bring his sleep sheep, his pacifer (only has it for naps and bedtime) and his 3 ducks that he sleeps with. He did much better then i expected. He normally sleeps from 7:30-5:30. Campig he slept from 8:30-5. We took him onto our mattress when he woke upcsince quiet hours were until 8 and i did't want him waking up nearby campers.

sorry for tyops. on my tablet

  • At 16 months, we used a pnp. At 28 months, we used a twin mattress and a sleeping bag as well. He did fine.

  • DH took DD camping in April. She slept in her own sleeping bag next to him in our 2 person tent. She did great, without an air mattress. But they did have extra comforters to keep them cozy, and a black lab cuddled up right in between them lol

  • We just went camping with DS(almost 23 mo) over Memorial Day.  He still sleeps in a crib at night and started the night out in a PNP.  He STTN at home but in the tent he woke up at ~2AM asking to nurse.  I nursed and then laid next to him on an air mattress.  He slept fine after that from ~3A-7A.  I think next time we might skip the PNP and just start with the air mattress.  GL!

We went at about 22 months and took a big blanket and folded it over a couple times to say nap mat size from daycare.  Then we tried putting her in a sleeping bag that didn't work so we just layered on the blankets and put on extra pjs.  She slept fine and it was probably more comfy than our air mattress that sprung a leak.

I'm thinking we will do this...so hard to get them to stay still when sleeping!
