  • I feel your pain, mine have been swollen all day from this heat and doing too much walking around. What helps me is staying off my feet for a few hours, propping them up, drinking TONS of water, sometimes I use cold towels if they are really swollen and uncomfortable and that also helps. Foot massages from DH also seem to help with the pressure and swelling.

I haven't tried it personally, but I hear compression stockings are also good.

  • Keep your feet up.  I would lay on my back on our couch and put my feet up on the arm rest, the swelling would go down pretty quick (it would also return pretty quick).  Ditto pp about upping your water.

Make sure you are drinking enough water, cut out salt and try soaking in a tepid bath.

This and also when people say put you feet up, you literally have to have your feet higher than your heart.  Propping on a pillow won't cut it.

  • I was super swollen my last few weeks.  I have to wear nylons for work so I bought maternity compression hose.  They were a godsend. I wore them all day and actually had ankles.

If you google maternity compression hose,  you'll find a bunch of companies that sell them.  I hunted around and found mine on clearance at therafirm.

  • Water, lots of protein, and elevate your legs when you sleep.  I had slightly swollen ankles around 28 weeks and just changed a few diet things and started sleeping with my feet on a pillow and the swelling all went away.

  • I would try compression stockings, if you haven't already. I got a pair from Rite Aid for $6, and they are totally worth it for the days I have to be on my feet a while.
  • Up the water and protein intake as a preventative.

I am on my feet all day and compression hose work wonders.
  • I also recommend compression hose. I am on my feet a great deal for work and they truly help.

I was told in my Bradley class that not enough salt can also mimic the swelling of too much salt. Basically your body panics with low sodium so it starts holding water to try to balance out. I think this is a long shot and really depends on what you eat. Most processed foods contain high sodium so unless you are eating all natural and not salting anything this is likely not the case. BUT if you have cut all salt from your diet to try to control swelling this could be a reason you still are.
I looked for a link but couldn't find one. This is something from a video we watched in class.
  • I'm sure you're already doing this, but every time you sit down, make sure your feet are up.
  • Everything everyone else has said. Also, I've been told that swimming/being in the water is a big help. Apparently your buoyancy in the water makes it as if your body weight is on the same plane as that of your heart, and the swelling can cycle more and eventually be redistributed or filtered out. I have only heard this in the last day or so, and it was in conversation, so I don't have a reference or source to offer. Best of luck!
