Need some reassurance — The Bump
1st Trimester

Need some reassurance

I'm freaking out a little. I'm 5 weeks into my second pregnancy and I have been following my normal workout routine as my doctor told me to do during the first tri of my first pregnancy. Yesterday I was at a workout class I attend a lot but the abs section was really tough that day and today my abs are really sore lower ones especially. For some reason I'm feeling nervous that I could have hurt the baby. I know ab exercises even on your back are fine for the first tri, but is it ok if you work them to the point where they are quite sore? I'm going to take it easier from this point but I am hoping to calm down about this. Thanks!

Re: Need some reassurance

  • You are totally fine. Just listen to your body when you're working out. Being sore is okay.

  • Those muscles are trying to stretch out, and will continue to do so the whole pregnancy. Ab work tightens those muscles. I found it useless to do any ab exercise knowing my body was just trying to do the opposite. But I hear if you maintain muscle and strength you can have an easier birth/recovery. You definitely won't hurt the baby, just maybe won't get a baby bump as soon (moms pregnant the 2nd time usually show faster because their ab muscles are already stretched out).

Thanks! I think I just needed to hear it from others. I appreciate the reassurance!
