Topamax

Was anyone taking Topamax prior to your pregnancy? What did your Dr say about staying on it? I curretly take 100 mg along with 4 mg of folic acid. I'm going to be talking with my doctor tomorrow, but i'm curious about other opinions. Thanks.

My neurologist told me that I MUST be off of topamax completely before getting pregnant, it is class D and has been known to cause birth defects.  Hopefully your doctor will have an alternative medication you can take.  Good luck!

Yea my dr pulled me off topomax even before I decided to try and get pregnant. If your treating a seizure disorder trileptal is a good one.

No Topamax during or even TTC.

I was on it before my first.  Dr. said I had to be off it before I got pregnant.  Be sure to talk to your Dr. ASAP if you were on it when you conceived.  I've been off it for a few years now and can't wait to have this LO so I can get back on it.

My doctor said the same thing...I had to be off of it and wait 30 days before ttc.

I was taking 200 mg (have been for years).  When I found out I was pregnant I called the doctor and she said that I should come off of it.  I was using it for migraines but if you are taking the medicine because you have seizures you should def talk to a doctor before just stopping.

 Since you conceived while you were on it, does the Doctor want to do any additional tests to make sure the topamax didnt do any harm?

Not that I know of.  She had my HCG and Progesterone levels tested twice.  I am not sure if that is because thats what they do normally or because of the medicine.  My BFF said they never did her HCG/Progesterone so they may have done that because of the topomax.  When I met with her at my 6 week appointment she didn't have anything to say about it.  I go back next week and plan to ask her if she thinks it would have affected the baby.

Ok, Thanks...keep me posted! I'm a little freaked out because I read it can cause neural tube defects and it usually occurs before you realize you are pregnant. But I think the chance is really low...like 1-3%.

I will keep you posted.  I stopped taking it cold turkey 12DPO when I got my positive so HOPEFULLY it won't cause any damage.  I am def going to ask next week.
