Cloth Diapering

SOS

I need help with stink issues before DH gives up on CD. Our pail is in DD's bedroom and it's stinking up the whole room. I've tried lid on and off. I've tried baking soda sprinkled in there and I rinse off poo. It really smells of pee. I don't know what else to try. I was Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Anymore ideas??

  • I'd change your wash routine. Your room should absolutely not be smelling with an open bag, especially with such a young baby. You should pretty much only be smelling it if you stick your nose right in the bag.

What detergent are you using? And what's your wash routine?

  • We use tide powder. We live in an apartment and have to pay per wash and per dry so I've tried to make my wash routine a economically friendly as possible. Currently I do a cold rinse by hand then just a hot wash and then dry. There is no just rinse option on the washers but if another rinse could help I could just run it without detergent. Would an additional rinse help? would I do it before or after the wash?

  • You could be using too much detergent, this happened to me, I was using a quarter cup, instead of a quarter of the recommended amount, once I cut back the stink issue went away,

You're probably not getting all the detergent out. Do the dipes stink right after your LO pees? And what kind of diapers are you using?

I use both prefolds and pockets. They do stink right after she pee's. I fill the detergent scoop up to the one.

  • I can go to my moms and use her wash in order to strip. I'll give it a shot!!

I really like my prefolds but DH prefers pockets. lol

  • How are you doing your hand wash rinse, btw? I would try warm water instead of cold, and put them in a bucket (or your tub) and agitate them using a plunger. Maybe even do it twice before you wash them. I agree too that you definitely need another rinse at the end of your wash.

Also, have you considered investing in a portable washer? You can wash your clothes in it as well, so the price to buy it may be offset by how much you're paying to do your laundry now.

when I hand rinse them I fill the tub a little to soak em and then I take each one and soak it then wring it out a couple times under the faucet. I actually haven't looked into a portable washer. We will be moving into a house in a year.

You should actually just buy a cheap plunger and plunge them. You will get them a ton more clean since it forces water in and pee out. Plus it's less effort than hand wringing them.
