I DID call the police

Well, DD did.

DH and her were playing on the couch while I was making dinner, and DH was letting her play with our phone (uh oh...), and then I hear it start to ring, and DH snatched it away from her, hit "off", and said, "Oh crap, that was 911!"

About a minute later we got a call back from the call center, and we explained the mistake, and she said it happens all the time but that a police officer would be stopping by our house just to make sure. He came about an hour later, and was totally nice about it, but we were embarrassed. Ooops...

Re: I DID call the police

  • Ha, ha! Our nephew did this when he was three, and my SIL had no clue until the cops showed up at her door.

At least she is little and it was an accident. :)

DS called 911 about 6 months ago. They had talked about it at school and he wanted to see if it worked. We had talked about it before so I have no idea why he decided to try it then. He hung up when they answered and they tried to call back and I didn't hear the phone so the police came to check. I freaked a little when the cop rang the doorbell because at that point I didn't know DS had called. Our house phone is upstairs and I was in the kitchen cooking dinner. The cop was not so nice about it and gave me a talk about talking to my kids about it which we had done but did again.

  • I pocket dialed 911 from my cell installing DD3's new car seat in our new vehicle.  Luckily here the police does not stop by.
  • Yeah, Lydia did once that when she was a baby. Only when they called back, she was playing with the phone and hung up on them again. DH had just put up a No Soliciting sign a few days prior so when the cops rang the doorbell, he answered but we normally don't answer if we aren't expecting someone.

DS2 did this once. I was mortified. He had pressed at least 15 buttons, so I wasn't worried about him playing with the phone, but turns out if the first three are 911, the call goes through anyway. Who knew. They just called back, though, and didn't send anybody out.

Could be worse, though. The mistake sucked a LOT more for this guy: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/toddlers-911-call-leads-to-grow-op-bust/article1152023/

    HAHA!! That's too awesome!

  • When I was about 6, we learned about calling the police at school. They told us to call 911 if we were in trouble or afraid.

A few days later, my dad was playing with my sister and I and we were running through the house. He got my sister and was tickling her or something and she screamed, "call the police!". So I dialed 911 and told them that my dad was chasing us and being a tickle monster. Then I felt scared and hung up and didn't tell my parents. About 10 minutes later, we were getting ready for bed and the cops were on the porch, banging on the front door.

I was in sooooo much trouble that night. My poor parents.

    Embarrassed

  • LOL! That happened to our neighbors. Their two year old twins called the cops and the cop came out to check on the call. They must have called and hung up without them ever knowing because the officer was having trouble finding their house, they had moved to another house in the neighborhood a few days earlier. So the officer was going door to door.

Opps!  Better keep the phone away from the kids!

  • I sure hope they were told it was a non-emergency...because an hour is a liiiitttlle long. LOL DD never did it, but most of my friend's kids have.
  • I've actually done it as an adult, we have a prefix here that is 991, so it also happens all the time.
  • Haha yikes! At least they are understanding about it LOL
