3rd Trimester

How late will your doc let you go?

I'm just curious. I think my doctor said she will consider an induction if you're ten days past your due date. Or maybe it was a week. I'm remembering from my last pregnancy so I'll have to ask her again next appointment. Is there a norm on this?

Re: How late will your doc let you go?

  • No longer than 41 weeks. My OB with DD was willing to let me go to 42, provided the baby showed no signs of stress.

  • Definitely varies by doctor. My OB office does a lot of inductions, and I personally would be induced at 41 weeks.
  • Mine will let me go to 42 as long as the baby continues to pass the NSTs.
  • The normal office policy is to talk about induction after 41 weeks but, my Midwife knows that I will refuse an induction if there is nothing wrong with the baby.
  • I think by 41 weeks. My dr mentioned before she is not available after that so she would induce by then. However I'm sure she would let me go to 42 and I would get delivered by a different dr if that's what I want. Ill cross that bridge if I get there.
  • Mine prefers not to go past 41 weeks, but if I want she will let me go to 42 as long as LO is doing ok.

  • Last time I was scheduled to be induced the night of 41 weeks and 2 days. That was about as long as she was willing to go. Thankfully I went on my own right at 41 weeks.
     DS1 8/2011. DS2 8/2013.

  • My dr said 41 weeks for ftms. She said the risk of stillborn goes up after 41 weeks and would recommend induction if I reach 41 weeks.

  • OB said she's willing to discuss it at 41 weeks if I'm really uncomfortable and 42 weeks is her hard limit. I'll cross that bridge when or if I get there

    Depends on the doctor.

I'm a VBACer with an awesomely hands off doctor and he will let me go to at least 41w, even with another big baby. If I go past due, we will have a growth ultrasound, a cervix check and a "talk." :]

  • 42 weeks with monitoring. I have a very low interventions OB for my VBAC (and she better stay that way, lol).

  • With my first pregnancy and OB I was induced at 41wks. It resulted in a c/s so in hindsight I wish she would have let me go longer.

Now that I have a c/s on my permanent record my new OB won't let me go past 40wks.

  • 42w with my midwife, though I think she'd budge by a day or two on the end in my favor. I'm comfortable with induction at that point but would do all that I could to keep the birth occurring at home before transferring care.
  • my dr. will induce as early as 39 weeks and wont let you go past 42 which seems to be the normSmile

    41 weeks for my doctor.
  • Earliest for healthy moms is 41w. Latest 41w 3d.

  • 10 days late is "normal", but with good NST tests I could stretch it to 42 weeks if I want.

I am assuming this is just for a RCS and not VBACing?

As you see above we have other cesarean moms who are VBACing with the capability of going past 40 weeks. So I am curious what her reasoning is.

Depending on each situation my doctor will allow different lengths

He lat one of my sisters go to 42 but induced me at almost 41 for medical reasons.

I would never be ok with going past 42 weeks.

This. I won't allow induction unless there is fetal distress.

This is the first I am hearing of this. I would do some research before you believe that comment

  • My OB has no issue letting you go to 41 weeks. After 41 weeks se likes to see you ever day/EOD just to monitor but will induce by 42 weeks.

I've looked into it and we briefly discussed it but not in details as we haven't reached that point, and I hope we don't really have to discuss induction. But the risk goes up, not a lot, only minimally, but since the outcome could be still birth, my OB thinks it's better to talk induction, and I agree.

  • They won't induce until 42 if there are no other medical indications, although my MWs will have you go in for an NST at 41, just to make sure things are all still OK.

  • 43 weeks is the latest my midwife is allowed to let patients go, monitoring starts at 41 weeks
