BTDT Moms: Q about Baby Benedryl

Mobile: Q about Baby Benedryl

DD's nose is running like a faucet. We did the humidifier, and saline spray. However, its running and a mess. I asked my pediatrician about baby benedryl a long time ago (and will again) but she said to avoid it for the most part. Do you use baby benedryl on your toddler? I'm just looking to dry her nose up so its not running everywhere and chapping her nose/mouth/face.

We wipe her nose frequently with soft tissues, but the poor thing is miserable and dripping. Advice?

  • I'd asked my pedi about it, too, but she said it's best not to use any OTC meds other than Tylenol or ibuprofen until age 4. My sister's pedi, however, has OK'd children's Benadryl for her son at age 2...

  • We've used it for things like colds, but I always give a half dose for his weight. And as an FYI, it doesn't seem to help him sleep at all. It doesn't hype him up either though.

  • I haven't used it on DS. His nose is running like crazy today, too. I find that using a wipe (or even the boogie wipes) can help when it's super runny as you don't have to work as hard to get all the snot off.

Oh, and wear black clothes. DS seems really eager to use me as a kleenex so long as I'm wearing black pants.

haha its true. I have a black shirt on and I'm the Human Kleenex! She signed that her head hurt so I gave her some tylenol and she's mainlining the water out of her sippy cup. So we'll just do that and lots of soft boogie wipes.

My pediatrician...the whole group of doctors in the practice actually,  don't recommend any type of decongestant before 5yo.

But I know benedryl is for allergies, is that what you suspect it is?  I'm starting to wonder if my DD has allergies, and our pedi recommends Zyrtec if we choose to try medication, but we haven't felt the need yet.

For runny and chapped noses, I use saline wipes instead of kleenex and a thin layer of vaseline to protect the skin when it's really red. That's about all I can do while my DD is getting over a cold or other virus.

  • Mine said ok but use half the dose and don't give it before bed the first time so you can see how they react. Made my son hyper and didn't help anyway.  Sticking him in the steamy shower with one of us at that age was most helpful.  Vicks on his feet helped too.  Hope you find something that helps. Their snail trails when sick are so gross. It gets everywhere!

Thank you. Our pediatrician recommended the same. She just emailed me back on the server. Alas, I am pretty sure its a cold. DD has some minor allergies but usually the running nose and the cough are cold related. She's just going to be a snotty sally for a bit lol.

Thanks for the info on vaseline. I hadn't even thought of that!

My pedi said no Benadryl until they are 4. We just use the Nose Frida and we have the Hylands Baby Tiny Cold Tablets, that seems to do the trick.

  • We have been using Benadryl as needed for awhile. Recommended actually by the pediatrician.

  • Never used benadryl on my one, but haven't heard any recommendations regarding this; I never think about decongestants. I do have a Hydrasense nose sucker that Marnie hates, but works wonders, especially at bedtime.

Boogie wipes are great (or, if you're cheap, sensitive bum wipes)...  But then again, being a human Kleenex seems to work, too!  ;)

  • I swear DD has had a runny nose since the day she was born.  Our pedi ok'd children's clariten for when it is really bad and that seems to do the job with no issues.  She's 3 now but we have used it for a while off and on.

  • FWIW, medicated chap stick works great on chapped noses. I use the blue wrapper with red text from target or walmart when i have a cold or allergy season. its 99 cents for one stick. Stings a bit upon application, but soreness and chapped skin heals over night.
