BumGenius questions

I have decided to go with bumgenius CDs for our baby boys arrival in October- which design do you like best, which closure and how many should I get? Would OS ones suffice for both newborn & infancy ...or do I need newborn? How do you find them with nighttime?

What else can you tell me, I am "green" when it comes to this CDing stuff, but I think I can handle it...I got hubby on board and now just need to think about purchasing. Thanks

Re: BumGenius questions

  • My stash is 80% Bum Genius. My preference is 4.0 pockets. I've tried the other two and I don't like them as much as my pockets. Aplix is easier, but I like snaps. Snaps are good for all ages since when they are older aplix is easy to open, so they'll take their diaper off more. One size is not good for newborns, you will have to use newborn diapers. As for over night I like them stuffed with a microfiber or bamboo insert and a hemp insert. However, I use fitteds and wool at night since my son sleeps 10+ hours and pees a ton.

  • I like the BG 4.0s with snaps. From what I hear, BG doesn't have the best aplix.  On the other hand, blueberry is well known for good aplix, so I have a few of those, which are my favorite for motn changes.  The 4.0s are trimmer than the freetimes and dry faster.  I have an elemental, but haven't tried it yet, so I can't speak to that one.  The OS may or may not fit your newborn.  Baby needs to have a bit of chunk to his thighs to get a good fit usually.   Some moms choose to use sposies until the OS fit.  I chose to use prefolds and covers because they're really not too expensive and with a little practice they're actually quite easy to use.  Another option is to do newborn pockets or AIOs, but that will be more pricey.

So far, the 4.0s work fine during the night, but my LO is only 8 weeks, so he only sleeps about 6 hours at the longest.  I'm sure adding a bit more absorbency will do the trick once he starts sleeping longer.

As for how many, that depends on how often you want to do laundry.  To wash every other day, you would need at least 24.  Newborns dirty a lot of diapers!

Good luck and have fun! :)

  • BG 4.0s are our favorite diaper.  They fit my chunky girl and my lean boy.  I prefer snap closures.  Aplix always gaps in the front, or rubs on their belly and leaves red marks.  I have never tried the other BG.  I prefer pockets over AIOs just because of how you can customize the absorbency.

We did not try BG OS until about 8 weeks/9lbs or so and then they fit perfectly.  I don't know if they would have fit before then.  We had a NB stash of pockets.

At night we usually use a BG OS pocket stuffed with a blueberry bamboo insert and two hemp doublers.  They sleep 10+ hours and have never leaked.

  • BGs are most of my stash and one of my favorites.  I like both the 4.0 pockets and the Freetimes.  If I use a 4.0 at bedtime, I usually add a hemp insert to it.  I prefer snaps.  If you want good aplix, my favorite aplix diaper is the TotsBots Easy Fit.

  • If you're going with BG, go with 4.0's in snaps. The aplix doesn't last super long and once they get bigger, it doesn't stay as secure.
