Cloth Diapering

ammonia stink, help!

I am at a loss. When I change dd2, she smells like ammonia. Her night diaper this morning was awful. To top it off, I think she's getting ammonia burn.
I've done some looking online, but there are 1000 suggestions and I don't know where to start.
Background, we use pockets, have a HE FLer, and hard water.
Also, it seems prefolds and flats don't seem to have this problem, am I right? I'm looking to try prefolds, any recs?

Re: ammonia stink, help!

  • Sounds like detergent and mineral buildup. I would strip with RLR. A lot of people would say to strip with Dawn. I did do that back in the day and it did work but RLR has always worked too and I feel like it is better b/c it addresses the mineral deposit issue which is legit for us since we have very hard water.

  • Thanks! I'm going to go to my parents house and strip them because they have a top loader.
    Does anyone know if RLR is sold at a store such as Target, or do I have to order it?

  • Stripping is for repelling. Your diapers smell because they are not getting clean. What detergent and how much are you using? Use the full amount of Tide and you may even want to add a quarter cup of bleach to the bleach dispenser. Keep using the full amount of Tide with two rinsed and you should not babe anymore stink issues. Use powder Tide Ultra if you can.

    Disagree. Barnyard stink = not clean
    Ammonia = build up. Usually.

    My dd is allergic to pretty much every lotion and detergent under the sun. We use Tiny Bubbles because its one she hasn't reacted to. She is allergic to Tide.
