Hair dye

Okay, so I know dying your hair while pregnant has mixed opinions from people about the safety of the hair dye.... But my question is.....why won't my hair color or dye since I've been pregnant?? I usually just put a few highlights with bleach in it my self, but it hasn't really lifted or lightened the last couple times I did it. so I decide to get a box of foam blonde hair color because my hair was getting a little too dark for me....well the blonde hair color I put on it today has seemed to turn it brown! I heard the hormones can make the color react differently, but this is my third pregnancy and I have never had this happen before, any suggestions on a blonde hair color that will actually work right now?? I can't afford to go to the salon. Ugh!

Re: Hair dye

  • I'm a stylist. Color doesn't lift color. Now that you actually put something on it, it's not going to lighten up anymore. And if you try one of those at home bleach kits I would bet your hair will turn orange. Hormones do funny things to hair, but boxed color does even worse. I can't tell you how many clients I've had come in and have to spend nearly double if not more to get their hair fixed that if they would have just gotten it done in the first place.

  • Weeeelll, as a stylist of five years and mother of 5, going on 6... I'd suggest waiting until after delivery because our hormones are going crazy and the color result may not be what's expected and it's either wait or be forced to see a stylist because you have orange or green hair due to the hormone imbalance! Yikes!!
  • Also, be VERY careful with that foam dye. My best friend used it, had a reaction in which she had to have IV antibiotics for 4 days and her brain was swelling. Scary stuff!
  • Thanks, I was hoping a stylist would reply to my post, do you happen to know how long after my baby is born that I can expect my hair to react normally again? I will surely go to a professional just in case next time.

wow that is scary! This was the first time I tried a foam hair color, I like the non drip aspect of it, but the result is just strange with my hormones right now.

  • I wonder if I should even bother going to a professional to get a few highlights on top of this brown?? I really don't like my hair brown.

  • A stylist, because they have such an array of professional color, should honestly be able to get your hair however you want it after having baby. I would have no hesitation in coloring a new moms hair. The biggest issue after baby seems to be shedding all the thick hair you gained while preggo!!;D

I would go for it, I felt like my hair was growing in darker after first tri so my sister, also a stylist, put some highlights in my hair and it turned out great and I feel much better about it!
  • After looking at my hair a little more its kinda that Bronde color, which is in style right now at least, lol!  At least it didnt turn out orange or green.Hahaha! Thanks for the advise everyone.

  • I was warned by a friend that hair dye doesn't work the same on some people when they are pregnant.

I'm just waiting until after delivery, but holy crap do I have intense roots.

I can understand that! I just don't want to see anyone go trough what she did. Because her local hospital is so small they didn't keep her over night but they left the IV port in and sent her home and she had to go twice a day to be checked and get antibiotics. They said she could have died if she didn't go to the hospital when she did!
