TDAP Question

Is there a cutoff for this? They asked me at 28 weeks and I passed because I was getting blood work and a rhogam shot and didn't want anymore poking and I haven't been asked again since. I had an appt today and I totally forgot to ask for it. I am 34 weeks and my next appt will be at 36 weeks.

Re: TDAP Question

  • Nope. You can get it at any time.

My doctor waits until after delivery to administer the shot.

  • CDC recommends pregnant women get TDAP vaccine between 27 and 36 weeks, every pregnancy. That way you pass antibodies to baby. I got mine at 31 weeks.

  • I was told that it would take about 4 weeks to get the most benefit to the baby as far as building up antibodies so it was suggested that I get it no later than 34-36 weeks if at all. They sprung it on me at the most recent appointment (32 weeks) and the CDC handout I was given didn't line up with what the doctor and nurse told me so I said I needed time to research benefits and medical necessity on my own.

FYI: I will be passing on it due to the doctor admitting that it would not be as beneficial since I just had one 2 years ago (and it hurt then!!) and she sees that as a cutoff of some sort, will not serve any purpose to actually protecting me (per CDC handout, only need a booster every 10 years), will only really protect baby for the first 2 months of life until receiving the first dose at 8 weeks, and this child will also be born in then summer (due date 2 days after my first was born) which is not a high risk season for pertussis.

  • I recieved it in the hospital last time. I was offered it earlier. I wasn't comftorable with that. It just has not been given out long enough to pregnant women that I am confident issues might not arise
