Cloth Diapering

Overwhelmed- wanting to CD need advice

Hey fellow Mama's & Mama to be's....

I am really interested in cloth diapering for our baby boy coming Oct 16, but I know very little about it. I figured who better to ask then other mom's who do it!!

The information on the internet is overhwleming, brands, types, what to use, what not to use....

I basically am curious what everyone uses and likes....what I will need for supplies for our little peanut (ie: how many diapers, pails, travel kits, ect)

and last question.....what the heck does everyone do if you leave the house and need to change a diaper? or are gone for a week?

  • First timer here as well...hopefully starting in a few days!!

The information is VERY overwhelming but you are being really proactive.  I spent about an hour a day a few days a week taking notes on everything and it was helpful to separate the research that way.

I strongly recommend watching videos that people have posted to YouTube.  I recommend this series in particular:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVo6SMebcX8

She has 7 videos total and they give you a great taste of the information you need!!

    TAKE NOTES!!!!

After researching for about 5 months, I decided to go with Thristie's Duo Wraps (in velcro until she outgrows size 1), Thirstie's hemp inserts for overnight, naps, and long trips, flannel wipes, Nellie's Laundry Soda for washing, Kangaroo wet bag for home, and Planetwise wet bag for travel.

I still ask questions...sometimes you just need to hear it from the mouth of an experienced CDer!!  :-)

GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS on your decision!!!!!

  • I was completely overwhelmed at first when I was planning but found actually using CDs to be pretty easy.

I chose to use mainly pockets with a few AIOs. For my newborn stash I have 20 Kawaii Pure and Naturals and 10 Alva newborns. The Kawaii PN are awesome. The Alva are okay. My baby is long and skinny so they don't fit unless I twist the tabs.

My OS stash is 6 BumGenius pockets, 6 BumGenius Freetimes, 6 different Kawaiis, and 12 Alvas. General recommendation is 24 total, so I went a bit overboard.

I have 2 kanga care pail liners and a plain plastic garbage pail for at home. In my diaper bag I use Alva wet bags and a Kissa's wet bag.

I use disposable wipes. CJs BUTTer for rashes. Original Tide powder for washing. Wash routine is a warm/warm quick wash followed by a hot/cold wash.

When I'm out, I just throw the dirty diaper in my wet bag and deal with it when I get home. On vacation we plan to use disposables.

  • I also found it very overwhelming. I lurked on this board for a while to get a feel for what's out there. I also watched tons of YouTube videos to see what others recommended.

Anyway, we decided to go with prefolds because our main goal was to save a lot of money. We could've gone with flats to save more, but those intimidate me. Anyway, I bought Clotheeze prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers . 24 small Clotheeze prefolds and 12 newborn prefolds. I also bought 5 small Workhorse fitteds that I could've gone without, but I wanted to try fitteds. I bought Snappis to fasten the diapers. 2xs covers and 4 small covers. 2 large Planet Wise Hanging Wet Bags, 1 med PW wetbag, and 1 small PW wet bag. I use water in a spray bottle for diaper changes with cloth wipes. When we're on the go, I bring 1 diaper for every 2 hours we'll be gone, an extra cover, Grovia Magic Stick, cloth wipes, spray bottle, and a small or medium wet bag. I have an SUV and change him in the back of it. I toss the diaper and wipes in a wet bag and wash with my other diapers later. When we travel, I plan on using disposables because my family won't let me wash diapers in their machines.
