I was in early labor for several days but only at a two. Then the ctx were so bad I couldn't take it anymore and went to the hospital. Still a two but they decided to give me my antibiotics for group b but they would likely send me home after the required doses. They were nice enough to give me some IV pain meds and they helped me relax enough to sleep. I woke up needing to pee and I peed the bed as DH was getting me unhooked. I called the nurse and she asked if it was pee or a rupture. I said pee and then went to the bathroom. Nurse came back and said um nope that was a rupture. I was still loopy from the pain meds so all I said was I get to stay! I had also progressed to a three so it was definitely official. I really did think I had just peed.
Share your water breaking story, if that happened to you on its own.
Guess I could start with my own...ha!
Got up to go to the bathroom about 4 a.m. on a Sat morning. When I laid back down, felt a "trickle" of something, like I had peed on myself. Got back up to check and it was not alot. Laid back down and it happened again, a few more times. Finally after like an hr of debating what was going on, my husband insisted I call the nurse on call. She said it sounded like it could be. But b/c it was still not alot at one time, I was still so hesitant to go to L&D and then be returned home. So I started laundry, ran the vacuum, and then all of a sudden, there was no guessing! More of a gush came at that point. So about 4 hrs after water breaking, I was at the hospital. Son born 8 hrs later. He was 15 days early and was my first. All that to say, I had ZERO signs it was coming!
Laying down and I was having mild contractions about 8 minutes apart. I felt like I needed to get up and walk. As I was getting out of bed I heard a pop and then water everywhere.
I woke up at 2:40am needing to pee and I was so excited that that was the first time I had woken up that night! I rolled over to get out of bed and my water broke and gushed everywhere. Being a FTM I didn't know if I was in labor or not as I had had absolutely ZERO contractions up to this point. I got out of bed, went to the bathroom as I still had to pee and then quietly went downstairs to google "water breaking, no contractions?". I then called my dr office and spoke with the on call dr. She said no rush but that I should start making my way to the hospital. I then went and woke my H up and he couldn't believe that we were really heading to the hospital to have our baby! We both took showers, I ate some leftover pizza as I didn't know how long labor would last and when I would be able to eat again. Contractions had started and we headed in. Our DD was born at 3:10pm that afternoon!
Mine didn't break until I was actively pushing. It doesn't always break to start off labour.
I didn't even think about my water not breaking (I was too busy labouring). It scared the crap out of me because it broke with FORCE and splashed everywhere (like I said, I was actively pushing). I had completely forgotten that it was something that was 'supposed' to happen.
DH and I had just gotten into bed and I was watching a little TV. DH told me not to stay up too late so I shut the TV off, rolled over to put the remote on my nightstand, and felt a scratch from inside and a huge gush. I told DH my water just broke and he asked if I was sure. It made me laugh because it was such a big gush that I was fairly certain! He jumped up to get me a towel and amazingly none got on my mattress!!
When I jumped in the shower, I realized that there was merconium (sp) so we left for the hospital sooner rather than later. 16 hours later Team Green became team PINK and our lives were forever changed!
#1 was at home, must have started during a routine midnight pee. When I got up it was a small gush, barely noticeable. Laid back down and stood up quickly to recreate several times (to make sure I wasn't just peeing myself). I was 37w3d. DD was born, via induction (I made 0 progress/no ctx) about 36 hours later.
I was induced and my water was broken at the hospital before they started the meds. They wanted to see if it would kick start my labor (it didn't).
I always thought the "bag" was thin and would break easily but it is much thicker and membranous. They used a metal, crochet hook looking thing. My OB had to give it a really good tug before it ripped and then there was a HUGE gush of water.

I was lucky enough to be home when my water broke with my daughter. It was ironic that we had the day off for Veteran's Day (I was in the Navy at the time) and was walking up the stairs at my home at the SAME time I normally would have been walking up the stairs to my office at work and then I felt like I maybe peed myself or something! I bent down to smell it on the floor (silly, I know...but I thought maybe it was pee!) and it didn't have a smell. So I tried to call the husband (who was driving to work because he had duty that day and of course he was on a road with no cell service) ...then I called my mom because I really wasn't sure if that was it. She said it probably was and I agreed, so I packed a bag (hadn't done so yet...although I was due in 5 days! LOL) and then I showered (probably wasn't supposed to do that) and called the hubs again, he came home, and off to the hospital we went. On the way there, calling family, any inkling of movement, laughter, talking I did and more would come gushing out...gross! But at the time, I didn't care, I was happy to be meeting my little Khiley soon!
I was in labor for probably 12 hours before it broke. I was already at the hospital. Had just gotten out of the tub to be monitored for a few minutes. Heard a pop, felt like I was peeing myself but it just didn't stop.
Evelyn (3.24.10), Graham (5.30.13) & Miles (8.28.16)
Fun! I was 9 days past EDD. It was August. I was huge and miserable. I had been sleeping the last month or two in our recliner as I could no longer sleep laying down. DH didn't want to be away from me so he had been sleeping on the couch next to me.
I had an induction scheduled for the following morning at 6am. Other than the fact that I had been dilated to 3cm when checked at 36 weeks and 4cm at 38 weeks (which clearly meant NOTHING in terms of timing) I had no labor signs AT ALL. We went to sleep around 10pm. At about midnight I was adjusting myself in the recliner (shifting my weight from one side to the other due to hip pain) and I felt a small gush. I thought maybe I had peed but when I moved again it happened again. DH was still sleeping. I went upstairs to the bathroom and sat on the toilet. Small gushes would happen when I would lean from side to side or front to back (I assume baby's head was acting as a stopper/cork and that's why I only had gushes when I moved baby). I wasn't contracting at all - no pain at all - so I put some old towels down in the tub and sat down/laid back in the tub and swayed/leaned till I stopped having much fluid coming out. I noticed lots of white stuff in the fluid (vermix, coating from baby's skin). Fluid was clear so I knew I wasn't in any huge hurry. Once I felt like most of the fluid was out I got out, grabbed some clean yoga pants and put a big pad I had bought for PP wear into my undies. I went down and woke up DH. He had the deer caught in the headlights look immediately. Since I still wasn't contracting, and since my OB had told us we would likely have plenty of time for a shower and snack if labor did start... DH took a quick shower to wake up while I finalized my hospital bag and called the L&D unit to tell them we were coming in earlier than 6am. We got the hospital about 1 or 1:30am.
I did not start contracting til about 4 hours past water breaking and even then contractions were very inconsistent though painful. They started pitocin and after laboring with that for less than an hour I got my epi which I had planned on anyway. Baby was born at 1:15pm with about 40 min of actual pushing.
Babies 2 and 3 my water did not break till I was about to push.

With my son, I was 37 w 3 days and I was on Spring Break (Middle School Teacher). I got up around 6:30 with my DH as he got ready for work. He went to the guest bath, I got up let the dog out and then sat back down on the bed (just about 7AM) to watch the Today Show... about two seconds after I sat down I hear/felt a pop and my water broke all over the bed. My husband finally came into the room to get dressed and found me in the bathroom telling him our "code word" Five Gallon Bucket! before he could get ready.
With my daughter at 37weeks exactly, I woke up to that same heard/felt pop, and new my water had just broke, felt the beginnings of a trickle and jumped up and ran to the bathroom, where when I sat down on the toilet it was like a firehouse. My husband sorta got that I had run to the bathroom, but thought I might be getting sick. Was very surprised when I told him my water had just broken.
This time, I have been expecting my water to break the whole time, and instead this big girl just wants to keep cooking, and is now at 38 weeks 3 days with a C-section scheduled for next Wednesday.
Did not have any late u/s or internal checks. Was 40w3d. Swiffering under the bed. Pop. Sploosh. Two towels worth. Shower. Once out contrax at 2 min apart pretty quickly. Dialated to 5 cm upon arriving at hospital.
Mine was a different situation, because I was on bedrest in the hospital, but still pretty funny. I was on bedrest for about 24 hours when I started having contractions...the nurse (and a HOT resident...oy) came in to check me and my water broke ON them in the midst of them checking. It was a major gush also and sofreaking gross.
I was actually kind of mortified because this was the same hot resident that had given me an internal after a scare a few days earlier...so first the poor guy had to give an internal to a chick who had been hemorrhaging like an hour earlier and then my dang water broke on him...then he assisted in my emergency c section and was on incision checking detail the following morning...he was probably REALLY sick of seeing me, lol!
I woke up at 4am to pee and see DH off to work, I was pulling down my pants to use the bathroom and there was a small gush... I wasn't completely sure what it was but it was completely clear so I suspected it was my water. I went pee and sat there for a minute and there was some trickling that was not from my bladder. Dh left for work and my contractions started about 40-60mintues later but I didn't have any more gushes or leaking until we went to leave for the hospital. At the bottom of the stairs, headed to the car I had another gush, much bigger this time and it wet the inside of my thigh a bit. I had one more gush about the same size as I got out of the car at the hospital.
I don't remember any more leaking or gushing but around 6pm they broke my water completely at the hospital (I was stuck at 4cms at that point and had been for several hours) and after that it went very fast, I dilated the remaining 6cms and delivered M at 7:30pm.
Proud babywearing, breastfeeding, vaccinating SAHM of 2U2!
I was 41 weeks exactly and went to get a pedicure. Pedicure was amazing, and when I stood up out of the chair, my water broke in a huge gush. Called my dr, he said to go to the hospital, called my husband to come pick me up. Went home to get our stuff and went to the hospital. I was having no contractions. They let me go 24 hours, and when contractions still did not start on their own, they gave me pitocin. Baby was born 8 hours later.
#1: woke up at 6:30a around 39 week, sat up to go to the bathroom and pop, it broke and trickled a little. Got to the nearby bathroom and caught some in a pad to check the color (light pink) and managed to get a pad on and wake up DH. Contractions started within 10 minutes
#2: had mild contractions for 5 hours, through which I slept from 9p-2a, at 39w. Ignored them, they were the most subtle squeezing, hardly noticeable. Woke up at 2:15 while laying on my side, felt and heard a pop and knew it was my water. Waited a moment or two then realized I better get up and thankfully had a rolled up towel already there which I use between my legs when I sleep to keep my pelvis straight. Stuffed that between my legs and waddled to the bathroom. Checked color. Contractions started on the toilet. I put a depends on then and didn't have to worry about more leaks. She was born about 2 hours later (at home, planned).
#3: ??? We'll find out
I had protected my mattress late in pregnancy with both pregnancies, and will do so again at the end of this one.
