Extended BF And MPSI ?'s

We made it to 1 year yay! I never thought I'd bf this long and now I really have no idea how to wean. It's such a sweet part of our daily routines and dd is just turning more into a mommas girl and I know she is not ready to give up nursing around sleepy times. So I'm a sahm and I stopped pumping a month ago bc I just didn't need to anymore. I only have a small freezer stash that I use when dd goes to Nanas. I'd like to start introducing some kind of milk in a sippy. She still spits up when I eat dairy so the doctor said to slowly introduce WCM by 18m. Talk to me about other types of milk almond, coconut etc. which ones are best? Is it dumb to try one now and switch to dairy later? Has anyone tried giving a milk sippy for naps? It seemed to be the only way to get dd to nap earlier, but it's new to me bc we usually just nurse. TIA!

Re: Extended BF And MPSI ?'s

  • My guy just turned 12mo. He's a milk monster, nursing 67x/day when we're together. Because he still spits up and has colitis if I eat even baked in dairy or soy, we went to the allergist. She recommended I stay dairy/soy free and nurse him until at least 2. She didn't recommend any of the alternative milks, since they don't have protein. Even though kids eat solids at 1, a lot of nutrition still comes from milk. So she wants him to nurse until 2, when milk is not necessary. I love nursing, but I work 80 hours per week and want to throw my pump out the window!

Are you wanting to wean? There's no rule that says you have to wean right now. DD2 is MSPI and is still nursing at 16 months. She sips on water throughout the day and drinks it with her meals. She's tasted rice milk when she steals DD1's sippy, but she spits it out, so she must not like the taste.

There is no perfect dairy alternative to WCM. The dairy alternatives have little to no protein or fat. Coconut milk does have fat in it though. DD1 has a true dairy allergy, so she drinks a cup or two of rice milk each day. I sometimes add pea protein powder to it, but she generally gets plenty of protein from the rest of her diet.

I would continue to nurse if you wish to continue nursing. And try to make sure LO is getting the fat, protein, calcium, vit d she needs from her diet (you don't have to worry about that as much if she's nursing because she's still getting a good amount of those things from your milk).

  • Yes I'm not quite ready to wean right now bc I know she is getting good things she needs from my milk. But I would like to be able to send her on an overnight to Nanas house this summer and not have to worry about BM. It would be nice if if could just have my mom keep some type of milk there for her. I don't know which type to choose though or how to introduce it? Mix it with BM?
  • Also she loves meat, so I guess I don't have to worry too much about the no protein problem.
