Baby Names

Same name as SIL?

I really like a name suggested on my previous thread: Bridget.

Trouble is, it's my brother's wife's name.  Her's is spelled Brigid (German spelling) but it's the same name.

It would be weird to name my kid Bridget, right?

Also, Bridget and Barrett??  probably also not good, right?

Re: Same name as SIL?

  • Could you use it as a mn? I love the name, and the SIl issue wouldn't bother me much, but I really don't like it with Barrett- way too matchy.

  • Too close to Barrett IMO. the sil thing wouldn't phase me though unless you are super close to her and see her a ton.

We are getting a lot of flack for using mia though bc my niece, who we see maybe a couple times a year, is maya.

  • I'm in the same boat! I love my sil's name but I think it would be really strange to name my child that. I love the name but I wouldn't want to cause confusion. Plus I'd want my daughter to have something at least unique to our immediate family.

It's up to you, she might be honored.  I don't think it's weird and I also don't think it sounds weird with Barrett, but I do like sibling names with the same first letter.

  • Eh, my aunt, grandmother, and I all had the same name. It was never much of an issue. If she's OK with it and the relationship is good, I think it's fine.

Two B names isn't unheard of.

  • While I love Bridget, I don't think I would use it if I had a family member with the name. Also I agree, I don't like it paired with Barrett. Sorry! It's such a lovely name!

  • I dont think you should name your daughter the same name unless you are naming her after her Aunt.

  • One of our name game rules was that we can't repeat first or middle names from any of our extended family. That includes cousins we don't talk to. We don't want the child to be under the impression that they are not individual enough to get their own name. If on accident that is totally different (can't control if family members divorce and happen to remarry someone who happens to have the same name). Like, a female we know whose brother married someone with the same first name as her. That has to be confusing at family gatherings which Katie is being spoken to! The trouble I see could be what if your brother and SIL get divorced - would he think the names are too similar and therefore be shallow enough to avoid your child so he doesn't think of his ex? Mine would!!!
